Capitalizing on Washington, D.C.'s diverse communities and its role as the nation's capital, the Washingtoniana Collection documents the city's political, economic, social, and cultural history. The collection contains individual and family papers and organizational records on subjects including city planning, politics, public transportation, business, the arts, and neighborhoods and communities. Materials date from 1814 to 2005. Gelman Library also houses a large collection of maps supporting Washingtoniana research.
