More and more journals, magazines, and other periodicals are becoming available in electronic versions on the Web. Often called e-journals, these publications offer quick and easy access to articles, but there are several factors that may make finding e-journal articles difficult.
- Not all journal are available in electronic form. Many journals are still avilable only in paper.
- Most e-journal articles are not free. Gelman has to pay a subscription fee in order for GW students and faculty to access particular e-journals.
- The Web has not evolved to the point where there is one, comprehensive source to search to find any and all e-journal articles on a specific topic.
If you're looking for articles from e-journals, use the following techniques:
Search ALADIN
All e-journal subscriptions for Gelman are listed in the ALADIN catalog. Search by the title of the journal. Entries for e-journals will include a link to the web site where you can retrieve articles.
Most journals do not have all back issues online, so you may not be able to find the particular article you need.
Search Databases
A few databases are available that provide access to the full-text of articles. These databases act as indexes to hundreds of journals and allow you to search by subject, keywords, author, etc. The following databases are good starting points to find e-journal articles:
For links to these databases, go to
ALADIN, click on "Alphabetical List," then click on the database name. If you're accessing ALADIN from off-campus, you'll need to login on the ALADIN home page before you see the "Alphabetical List," link.
E-Journal Collections
Some publishers have made great strides in making their journals available on the Web. By visiting their sites, you can search for articles from the journals they publish. Similarly, a few special projects have been launched to make journals in certain subject areas accessible via the Web. Here are the major e-journal sites to visit to find articles:
To access these sites, go to
ALADIN, click on "Electronic Journals," then on the name of the site. If you're accessing ALADIN from off-campus, you'll need to login on the ALADIN home page before you see the "Electronic Journals" link.
