"The mission of The Gelman Library System Advancement Office is to ensure continuous financial and in-kind support for resources and services that satisfy the current and future research, curricular and information needs of GW students and faculty.”
Jack A. Siggins, University Librarian
At The Gelman Library System, we have tried to maintain continuity with the past,
present and future. Instead of rushing to blindly acquire resources in the
newest formats, we have tried to maintain a balance between the need for electronic
resources and the need to maintain our book collections. We have placed our
emphasis on acquiring and preserving materials for our general and special
collections that might otherwise be lost through deterioration. We actively
seek out such unique resources as manuscripts and photograph collections, as
well as rare books and maps, all needed by our students and faculty members
for original research.
In short, despite taking advantage of new technological developments to provide
better access to information, we do not view The Gelman Library System as a
flashy information arcade. Instead, we model ourselves after great nations’ research
libraries, confident that because we exist, generations of young people will
be exposed to humanity’s literary heritage. With our collection and at
our study tables, each new generation will develop an interest in research
and the life of the mind, which will enrich their lives and our society.
We at The Gelman Library System are looking for people to help us in our mission.
If you are interested in seeing The George Washington University move into
the first rank of academic institutions nationwide, or are committed to the
life of the mind and think it important for today’s young people to explore
humankind’s literary heritage, you will appreciate the importance of
further strengthening The Gelman Library System. Our Advancement Office team
will advise you how to get involved as a Gelman Library System supporter. Our
team is dedicated to helping you plan your gift in the way which meets your
needs. We encourage you to decide exactly how your gift will be used. We are
prepared to work with you and your financial advisors to help you receive the
most advantageous tax benefits. Our most basic need is for a strong general
endowment. As with any institution, endowment funds can make the difference
between merely covering expenses and being able to innovate.
