Ways of Giving
Gifts to The Gelman Library System can be made in various forms, including
outright gifts, pledges, and testamentary or life income arrangements. We can discuss additional charitable giving formats, such as payroll deduction, annuities, bequests, or securities, at your convenience.
Pledges generally will be paid within a five-year period, although other
arrangements may be made in exceptional circumstances.
- Gifts may be made with cash, appreciated securities, real estate or
other marketable property, life insurance policies, and other assets.
- Many individuals will choose to support The Gelman Library System through
bequest provisions in their wills, perhaps combining such a deferred commitment
with an outright pledge.
- Gifts providing lifetime income to the donor and his or her beneficiary
may be made through a variety of instruments, including unitrusts, gift annuities,
annuity trusts, and the University’s pooled income fund. Such gifts provide
significant financial and tax advantages to the donor and often enable an individual
to make a gift to The Gelman Library System much greater than he or she may have thought
possible.
- Gifts-in-kind of equipment, computer software, library materials, and
other items that meet specific, identified needs are gratefully received.
- The Gelman Library Advancement Office professional staff is well qualified
to work with individuals and their legal or financial advisors in planning
gifts to the library.
Library Endowments
Your visible way in establishing an endowment serves as a lasting encouragement
for others to follow that lead by investing in the mission of The Gelman Library
System.
A gift of an endowment establishes a named fund that is invested by the University.
Only a portion of an fund’s investment returns is expended for the purpose you designate,
ensuring the fund will grow in perpetuity. You can create a permanent endowment
fund for The Gelman Library System, which may be named for you or another individual.
An endowment can be established within The Gelman Library System with a donation
of $50,000 or more which may be given over a period of up to five years. Gifts
can be added to the endowment at any time to increase the endowment after it
is established.
Although there are many different endowment opportunities, the following examples
help illustrate the concept – and the possibilities:
- Endowed librarianship can be established with a minimum gift of
$5 million. Income from the gift is used to support the compensation of the University
Librarian.
- Endowed graduate fellowship can be established with a minimum gift
of $500,000. Income from the gift is used to provide a stipend and tuition
assistance to a full-time graduate student working in the Library System.
- Endowed fund for education or research can be established with a
minimum gift of $100,000. Income from the endowment is used to support educational
programs or research in a discipline or field designated by the donor.
- Endowed acquisition or preservation fund can be established with
a minimum gift of $50,000. Income from the endowment is used to support the
acquisition of books and other materials and the preservation of existing collections.
Endowed funds can be partially funded with a current gift as long as there
is an agreement between the University and you that provides for full funding
of the endowment over a set period of years. You are free to designate any
of these endowments for a specific department or academic discipline.
Several representative library endowments have been established by generous
patrons to build specific collections, library materials and resources, to
memorialize friends, and for other purposes.
