Renowned Athletes, Artists and Olympians Enroll in GW's STAR EMBA Program
Super Bowl Champions Kevin Boothe and Marques Colston Among Students To Join Program
Feb 17, 2012
WASHINGTON – Some of the National Football League’s top players, including the New York Giants’ Kevin Boothe and the New Orleans Saints’ Marques Colston, are among the students enrolled in the George Washington University School of Business’ (GWSB) STAR (Special Talent, Access and Responsibility) EMBA program. The second cohort of STAR EMBA students, which includes a number of NFL players and their spouses, a PGA golfer and two former Olympians, begins classes today.
Focusing on leadership, success strategies and social responsibility, the STAR EMBA program is the first fully accredited M.B.A. curriculum in this field and provides students with customized experiences designed to fit their non-traditional schedules and backgrounds.
“The challenges—both professionally and financially—faced by athletes, musicians and entertainers are unique,” said GWSB Dean Doug Guthrie. “These talented individuals must map out and implement a precise plan to take their business endeavors to the next level. Our STAR EMBA program provides these students with the indispensible skills and resources necessary for success.”
The program is designed to teach individuals with a personal brand how to translate their current career success into business and social achievement. Courses are customized around the students’ time commitments, allowing students to obtain an advanced degree and develop business opportunities while remaining active in their careers and lives.
"STAR EMBA is a tool for empowerment," said Sanjay Rupani, GWSB chief strategy officer. “It is customized specifically to help define a path for people with strong personal brands to encounter new career opportunities and pursuits. Our students have great experience and are natural leaders. They are going to generate very powerful outcomes for their communities through business creation and philanthropic activity."
The STAR EMBA program is not only multi-disciplinary in its curriculum, it is also geographically diverse. Students attend classes in Washington, D.C., New York and Los Angeles over an 18-month period, allowing them to tap into the thought leaders and change makers in business and philanthropy in each of these world-class cities.
The program, which includes on-site and online courses, also provides students with access to a special network of individuals and organizations that can help expand their personal brands and influence in the business community, both at home and abroad. In addition, STAR EMBA students will be able to create their own personal business plans, guided by professors, mentors and coaches.
"The STAR EMBA program at GW's School of Business is a great opportunity for me to take the leadership experience I’ve gained during my time in the NFL and translate it into business success off the field," said Marques Colston, the Super Bowl XLIV champion and Saints wide receiver. "I want to be more involved in my community and impact it in a positive way. GWSB's commitment to society and customized education allows me to combine my personal interest in making a difference with a professional skill set to ensure my projects succeed."
GW's School of Business prepares students for professional management careers. The emphasis placed on corporate social responsibility, ethics and leadership is integral to every program offered by the School of Business. The depth and variety of its academic and professional programs, including five specialized master's programs, provide rich opportunities for students in the school's core bachelor of business administration, master of business administration and doctoral programs. GW's undergraduate- and graduate-level international business programs rank among the world's best.
