GW ISS Recognized for Sustainable Practices and Innovation by National Publications

"Smart CEO" Awards Honorable Mention; "Source Media and Information Management" Recognizes GW with Innovation Solution Award

Dec 1, 2009

WASHINGTON—The George Washington University’s Information Systems and Services (ISS) division has been recognized for its sustainable information technology initiatives by "Smart CEO" and "Source Media and Information Management" magazines.

GW received an EcoCEO Award honorable mention from "Smart CEO" for implementing sustainable solutions that add business value. "Source Media and Information Management" presented its Innovative Solution Award to GW for its IT initiatives that provide quantifiable business value and real-world impact.

“GW students, staff and faculty share a rich history of promoting environmental consciousness, cleaner living and the best practices of sustainability,” said Dave Steinour, GW chief information officer. “GW recognizes that information and communications products and technologies are a growing source of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, ISS embraces its role as a leader in the higher education IT community and its duty to act as a responsible citizen of the world.”

ISS has implemented a number of green initiatives, which were designed to decrease GW’s energy use, save valuable resources and improve customer services. "Smart CEO" magazine targeted several major factors that contributed to the University’s recognition, including GW’s virtualization of its server environment, a technology that leverages hardware and software to allow multiple computer systems to run on a single server; LifeCycle Refresh program, a project that replaces older servers and systems with new energy-efficient ones; and GWDocuments, an initiative that reduces the need for physical space required by file cabinets and the use of printing by consolidating electronic administrative documents into a central storage area.

"Source Media and Information Management’s" editorial team chose GW for its demonstrated creativity, creation of competitive advantage and positive impact on the bottom line. By using VMWare, ISS has delivered a mix of sustainable IT practices that have defined the University’s sustainability mission. ISS has virtualized approximately 38 percent of its total server environment, saving 700,000 kilowatt-hours, which translates to taking 60 cars off the road. Old servers and data center systems were replaced with new energy-efficient machines, decreasing energy use by nearly 60 percent. The number of physical servers also has been reduced by consolidating electronic administrative documents into a central storage area.

GW’s Information Systems and Services (ISS) division works with students, faculty, staff, and departments across the university to provide advanced technology. From Internet and phone connections in offices and residence halls to software that supports admissions, online registration, and other aspects of day-to-day business, ISS keeps GW connected.
