First Sitting Federal Reserve Chairman to Deliver a Lecture Series at GW School of Business

Series to Focus on the Federal Reserve and its Place in Today’s Economy

Jan 26, 2012

WASHINGTON—This spring, George Washington University students will learn about the inner-workings of the Federal Reserve directly from the man who leads the central banking system of the United States.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke will deliver four lectures as part of the GW School of Business (GWSB) class "The Federal Reserve and Its Role in Today’s Economy.” The class will be taught by Professor Tim Fort, chair of the Department of Strategic Management and Public Policy. This class will be open to undergraduate students with a basic understanding of the Federal Reserve and its functions and begins on March 20. Dr. Bernanke’s lectures are scheduled for March 20, 22, 27 and 29.

“Chairman Bernanke’s distinguished career and tenure at the Federal Reserve place him in a unique position to provide GWSB students with an unmatched understanding of the Federal Reserve’s role in today’s economy,” said Doug Guthrie, dean of GWSB. “Through our location in Washington, D.C. and faculty relationships, we are able to leverage fantastic opportunities like this for our students. We are grateful Chairman Bernanke’s commitment to education led him here, and we look forward to having him on campus.”

Since taking the role of Federal Reserve chairman, Dr. Bernanke has made an effort to educate citizens about the role of the Federal Reserve, encouraging public understanding of what the Federal Reserve does, its history and how it responded to the recent financial crisis and its aftermath.

“This class is a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with the chairman of the Federal Reserve and to consider its greater meaning in society today,” said Professor Fort, Lindner-Gambal Professor of Business Ethics. “It is an unbelievable opportunity for our students to be able to talk about such an important subject with one of the leaders of the world economy. “

Dr. Bernanke took office as Federal Reserve chairman on Feb. 1, 2006, and began a second term as Federal Reserve chairman on Feb. 1, 2010. He also serves as chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee, the system's principal monetary policymaking body. Before his appointment as chairman, Dr. Bernanke was chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers from June 2005 to January 2006.

From 1994 to 1996, Dr. Bernanke was the Class of 1926 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. He began his tenure at Princeton University as a professor of economics and public affairs in 1985 and served as the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and chair of the economics department from 1996 to 2002. Prior to that, Dr. Bernanke was an associate professor of economics from 1983-1985 and an assistant professor of economics from 1979-1983 at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

There will be an application process for students who are interested in taking this class. It is open to undergraduate students who have good academic standing and have a basic understanding of the Federal Reserve system. “The Federal Reserve and its Role in Today’s Economy” is a 1.5 credit course that meets 14 times. Online viewing will be available to the public. After the lectures, transcripts and video recordings will be posted online.
