His academic research examines the sources and economics of innovation. Von Hippel is the originator of lead-user theory and a leading voice on open methods of innovation development and the benefits of open-source technology. He is a founder of the entrepreneurship program at MIT, and recently accepted a two-year appointment as a Welling Professor.

Founded by GW President Emeritus Stephen Joel Trachtenberg in 1995, the Welling Professorships bring internationally distinguished scholars to the University to deliver annual lectures and interact with students and faculty. The program is named after former GW President James Clark Welling, who served from 1871 to 1894.

The event is presented by the GW School of Business Department of Marketing in cooperation with the Department of Information Systems and Technology Management and the Department of Management.

GW's School of Business prepares students for professional management careers. The depth and variety of its academic and professional programs, including five specialized master's programs, provide rich opportunities for students in the school's core Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration, and doctoral programs. GW's undergraduate- and graduate-level international business programs rank among the world's best.
