Michelle Obama, Jill Biden to Speak at GW Veterans Day Ceremony

Addresses by the wives of the president and vice president will be part of daylong campus activities in celebration of the nation’s veterans.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will address the GW community in a special Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11, part of a daylong celebration of veterans at the University.

Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden will offer remarks at the 2 p.m. Lisner Auditorium event, titled “Mission Serve: Forging a Continuum of Service,” which will include the unveiling of 36 civilian-military organization initiatives; a theatrical production featuring veterans titled The Telling Project; the awarding of the first ServiceNation award for excellence in military and civilian service to Alma J. Powell, wife of former Secretary of State Colin Powell, M.B.A. ’71; and a University welcome from GW President Steven Knapp. MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway will serve as emcee.

The two-hour event will be co-hosted by ServiceNation’s Be the Change; Blue Star Families, a group of military spouses formed to raise the awareness of the challenges of military family life; and Student Veterans of America. ServiceNation is a national campaign to increase service opportunities in the United States.

The day’s events also include a military physical training demonstration, obstacle course and pull-up/push-up contest with prizes hosted by GW Student Veterans at 10 a.m. at University Yard. At 11 a.m., student veterans, along with Lieutenant Colonel Clark Welch will lead a wreath-laying ceremony, with remarks by Senior Vice President for Student and Academic Support Services Robert Chernak. A free barbecue will follow.

Volunteers from the GW community will assemble care packages for troops at a fair hosted by Blue Star Families from 11:30-12:30 p.m. in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom. Co-sponsors include Target and the PBS Documentary “This Emotional Life.” To register, visit http://gwcares.eventbrite.com.

On Sept. 11, Mrs. Obama announced she will speak at the University’s 2010 Commencement if the GW community performs 100,000 hours of community service throughout 2009-10 academic year.

Tickets are free but required to attend the Mission Serve event with Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden. Tickets are sold out. Doors will open at approximately 11:30 a.m. Ticketholders must be seated by 1:30 p.m. and unoccupied seats will be released to the standby line at that time.

GW recently announced its first major gift specifically earmarked for student veterans. The $100,000 QuikClot Scholarship from Z-Medica Corporation, a medical device company that provides lifesaving medical supplies to U.S. military troops, was established under the guidance of Z-Medica CEO and GW alumnus Brian Herrman. The scholarship will support GW’s commitment to the Yellow Ribbon Program, a new provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act that provides free or significantly-reduced tuition to qualifying veterans.
