Graduate Certificate in Leadership Development

Explore Leadership, Learning and Change with
a Global Perspective

The six-course program in Leadership Development is designed to increase the learning, leadership, and change capacity of individuals and organizations with a global emphasis in Human Resource Development. Theory, research and practice are balanced throughout the curriculum. The program allows you either to pursue a certificate or to take courses as electives. The program begins and ends at the Virginia Campus with classes alternating at affiliate sites in Asia, Europe and South America. Certificate highlights include:

  • Gain international experience
  • Program meets five times a year which includes an eight day Summer Residency in Ashburn, VA
  • Each session will be completed in one week
  • Curriculum includes international company site visits and cultural exchanges
  • World-renowned faculty and local guest speakers
  • 18 credits can be used towards a Master’s degree upon application

This program benefits mid to senior level executives who are charged with leading in international and multinational organizations. The learning design moves participants beyond knowledge to developing their own global competence through actionable learning in various locations around the world.

Curriculum

Session 1: July 18-25, 2008 in Ashburn, VA

HOL 263-Foundations of Human Resource Development
How individuals and groups learn and interact within organizations and how organizations function and learn.

HOL 283-Leadership in Organizations
This course provides an overview of the seminal works, contemporary theories and models, and explores some of the emerging perspectives in leadership. The goal is to expose participants to the various ways in which leadership has been conceptualized over the past half century, and to discuss how it will be shaped in the future.


Session 2: October 19-23, 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic


HOL 290-Organizational Learning
Learning is an organizational context. Processes through which the organizational system learns, unlearns, changes, and disseminates information. Organizational learning theories address the processes and barriers to gathering, developing, and retaining knowledge in organizations.


Session 3: January 25-29, 2009 in Santiago, Chile

HOL 274-Work Groups and Teams in Organizations
Exploration of the nature of work groups and teams as they are used in organizational settings. Students will gain a better understanding of group/team dynamics, facilitation skills and group roles.


Session 4: April 19-23, 2009 in Singapore

HOL 239-International and Multicultural Issues in Organizations
The impact of culture and globalization on the U.S. and international HRD programs and practices. Adult learning and organizational change approaches that develop and utilize the synergy of workforce diversity.


Session 5: July 19-22, 2009 in Ashburn, VA

HOL 286-Issues in Human Resource Development
Current issues and topics of importance in the field. Students gather data and analyze key topics associated with subject areas like globalization, diversity in the workplace, organizational development, and ethics.


Admissions

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate in Leadership Development must meet the minimum criteria below for admissions:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • One official transcript from each institution attended, whether or not a degree was conferred
  • A minimum of 2.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale from the most recent degree received
  • Resume
  • One page Statement of Purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation

Classes begin in July, 2008. If you are unable to start in July, 2008, take advantage of our rolling admissions process and submit your application and $60 fee at any time throughout the year.
