Get Involved

For many women in the developing world, connecting to the care and information they critically need- especially in cases of emergencies- can truly mean the difference between life and death. And hard working health care providers (which are scarce enough) lose precious time traveling to patients in rural areas who could otherwise be reached by phone. Providing women and health care providers with mobile technology can help save lives and improve health.

Donating your used phone can make a big difference. The U.S. alone discards about 500,000 phones every day which in turn pollute our environment. Instead of throwing those phones away, used cell phones can be recycled and the proceeds of that effort are invested in purchasing new equipment and deploying it in the field.

With your help, GW will collect 20,000 used cell phones and donate them to Hope Phones, and organization that will recycle your used cell phone and use the proceeds to fund two maternal mobile health technology projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nepal. The average donated phone in the U.S. will generate 2-3 cell phones for the field. Smartphones can yield 5-10.

Interested in getting involved? Helping is easy:

1. Look through your old drawers in your residence hall, home or office and find as many used cell phones as you can. Ask for friends, neighbors and co-workers to help too - you can start your own collection drive. Remember, you can donate phones that are broken as well as other portable electronic devices like ipods, ipads and digital cameras. The device do NOT have to be in working condition and you don’t need to collect chargers or other accessories. All devices will be cleared of personal information prior to being recycled.

2. Register your donations, and receive a confirmation email with a pre-paid mailing label (downloadable PDF). Print out the label and affix it to a padded envelope (you will need to obtain this on your own). Enclose up to 10 used cell phones or portable devices, seal and put the envelope in the mail.

3. Drop-off your used cell phone or devices at designated campus locations. You will need to complete a brief form at the drop-off location.

If you are donating a GW-owned cell phone/device and/or donating more than 10 used phones/devices, please contact us at donate-phones@gwu.edu and we will contact you to process your donation.
