FAQs

What can I donate?

You can donate any used cell phone. The device does not have to work and you don’t need to have any of the accessories like the charger. The average donated phone in the U.S. will generate 2-3 cell phones for the field. Smartphones can yield 5-10. In addition to used cell phones, you can also donate other portable electronic devices like tablet computers, iPads, digital cameras, ipods, etc.

How do I donate my used phone?

You can register your donations here [hyperlink]. You will then receive a confirmation email with a pre-paid mailing label (downloadable PDF). Print out the label and affix it to a padded envelope (you will need to obtain this on your own). Enclose up to 10 used cell phones or portable devices, seal and put the envelope in the mail. OR, you can drop-off your used cell phone or devices at designated campus locations. You will need to complete a brief form at the drop-off location.

If you are donating a GW-owned cell phone/device and/or donating more than 10 used phones/devices, please contact us at donate-phones@gwu.edu and we will contact you to process your donation.

Will the private information on me cell phone be erased?

Yes. All phones will undergo a process to remove all the personal information from the phone before it is recycled.

What if I don’t have a used cell phone to donate? Can I still help?

Yes. Even if you don’t have a used phone to donate, you can ask for friends, family, neighbors, etc for their used cell phone. In addition, you can volunteer to encourage enrollment in Text4baby. Register to volunteer.
