The Documentary Center at The George Washington University announces the International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship, an intensive six-week program that will take place May 26 – July 8, 2010. We seek twenty emerging documentary filmmakers from across the globe to participate in this unique international cultural exchange and professional development opportunity. The Fellowship is sponsored by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

The International Emerging Documentary Filmmakers Fellowship is both comprehensive and challenging. Now, in its second year, this program brings emerging documentarians from around the world to work in a collaborative environment geared toward launching their work on to the world stage. During the six-weeks, Fellows will develop a common language about documentary filmmaking that crosses national boundaries and cultures while utilizing the abundant resources that working and living on the campus of The George Washington University in the nation’s capital of the United States can offer.

In the first year of the Fellowship, we welcomed ten emerging filmmakers from Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Somalia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya, Indonesia, Jordan, and Ethiopia. In 2010, we will double our acceptances to twenty Fellows and again will be reviewing applications from countries around the world where traditional infrastructure for the creation and distribution of documentary does not currently exist.

On a practical level, Fellows will have the opportunity to make two short films in a very “hands-on” exploration of the documentary form. Production of these films will occur both in Washington, DC and in New York City using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities provided by the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University (GWU). Further, Fellows will participate in round-table discussions with notable U.S. filmmakers and will meet representatives from major broadcast networks. Finally, Fellows will attend SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival, including the International Documentary Conference that convenes the third week of June 2010. This year, participation in SILVERDOCS and the Conference will include an opportunity to engage middle and high school teachers (grades 6-12) as we strive to integrate the work of our Fellows into classrooms around the United States.

All expenses for this Fellowship are provided, including international travel (as well as necessary in-country travel costs to acquire a U.S. Visa), accommodations, daily food stipend, domestic U.S. travel, equipment, materials costs, registration, and tuition fees. Costs for extracurricular entertainment or travel that are not an articulated component of the Fellowship are not included. Fellowship participants will reside in the dormitories on the GW campus, located in the heart of Washington, DC, within walking distance of the city’s historic monuments, Smithsonian Museums, and modern transportation system.
