  The Application Process  

Non GW Students:

You will be routed through the application process via the Columbian School of Arts and Sciences, you will be required to apply online for the "Spring 2010" semester at the Foggy Bottom Campus.

The following are required to be submitted DIRECTLY to the
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences:
- 2 letters of recommendation
- A personal statement (essay)
- Your university Transcript

Note: No GRE or other test is required for a certificate program.
International students, be advised that TOEFL scores are required of all applicants who are citizens of countries where English is not an official language. Exceptions may be made for applicants who hold a degree from a college or university in a country where English is the official language and the medium of instruction. The minumum TOEFL score for admission is 80 on the Internet-based test or 550 on the paper-based test. Additionally, please note that student visas are not available for enrollment in the certificate program. therefore requesting a student visa specifically for this program does not qualify.

GW Students wishing to register for 230 and 231 must receive permission from the instructor. Please note, 230 is a prerequisite to 231 and runs into summer session. Graduates of the full 9 credits will receive the Institute Certificate. In order to persue the certificacte, petition for admission to the certificate program must be submitted.

To seek permission, please email Professor Seavey at nlk@gwu.edu. Upon permission you must come to our offices to get your registration transaction form signed. Please email or call for an appointment. Please see page 2 of GW student course descriptions for important registration information .

GW students wishing to also take 231 will need to submit the application essay along with request for permission addressing the following questions:

1) Why do you wish to be a member of the Institute? What unique experience or attributes would make you an asset to a documentary production team? Note that selection is based on a variety of criteria, not only on your past academic or professional experience, but also on your personal interests, travel experience, and world-view.

2) Because the members of each Institute collectively produce a short documentary film, we are interested in learning more about your ability to work with others. Please carefully describe a significant experience in which you had to depend upon others and work in a group.

You may turn it in to the Professor directly by mid Spring semester.
