Computing Capabilities

The George Washington University enjoys a longstanding reputation as a center for advanced computing research across disciplines.

GW’s focus on high-performance reconfigurable computing spans several initiatives at the University. Three research centers—the High Performance Computing Laboratory, the Center for High Performance Reconfigurable Computing, and the Institute for Massively Parallel Applications and Computer Technologies—conduct much of the research in this area. Other programs, centers and institutes use the facilities as well, including the National Crash Analysis Center, the Center for Intelligent Systems Research, and several other programs within the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Computer Science.

The Computing Facility within the School of Engineering and Applied Science is a hub for computer-related engineering research. The facility provides, coordinates, and manages a comprehensive, integrated set of computers, software, and network resources dedicated to engineering and computer science programs. The Institute for Computer Graphics is among the facility's users.

SEAS is also a member of the Cadence University Program, which provides a wide range of high-level electrical engineering design, simulation, and analysis tools used by leading developers in industry and research.

At GW’s National Crash Analysis Center on the Virginia Campus, researchers and engineers use computer modeling to simulate a full range of crash scenarios on high-performance computers, with the goal of obtaining data to improve vehicle design, restraint systems, and highway safety. Another GW program focuses on the fast-growing field of High Technology Crime Investigation, combining the sciences of information technology and forensics with the arts of investigation and critical thinking. Faculty at GW are also conducting research in biomedical computing and bioinformatics —the study, design, and use of computational and mathematical tools to answer questions about DNA and related molecules.
