GW Celebrates Alumni Public Service
Annual receptions gather alumni serving in Congress
In April 2009, more than 130 GW alumni joined President Steven Knapp at the Fifth Annual Capitol Hill Alumni Reception, hosted by Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), M.B.A. ’75, and Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), B.S. ’63, in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The event featured a keynote address by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), B.A. ’77, and also honored the newly elected resident commissioner of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, J.D. ’84.
Dr. Knapp used the occasion to note that GW is one of the nation’s largest reservoirs for volunteer organizations such as the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and Teach For America. He also acknowledged the University’s commitment to the U.S. military, which includes participation in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program as well as GW’s decision to enroll all 21 of the U.S. Army’s congressional fellows in the Graduate School of Political Management.
