A Celebration of Caring and Community
Sixth Annual GW Cancer Gala honors leadership and heightens support
The Annual Cancer Gala has become a signature GW event, raising funds for critical cancer programs throughout the D.C. metropolitan area while recognizing the outstanding leaders who spur research and advocacy against this disease. The gala also brings together key members of the D.C. City Council to rally their continued commitment and support for our efforts.
In 2009, the gala featured the presentation of the Spirit of Life Award to GW’s own Jeanette A. Michael, J.D. ’75, a member of our board of trustees, past president of the D.C. Chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators and a former executive director of the D.C. Lottery and Charitable Games Board. A breast cancer survivor herself, Michael has inspired other survivors as a community leader and advocate for breast cancer awareness.
The event also honored Sen. Edward M. Kennedy with the Cancer Compassion Award for his persistent work in advancing the coordination of resources for cancer prevention, detection, research and treatment. Dr. Rachel F. Brem received the Commitment to Overcoming Cancer Award for her work in improving cancer diagnosis and treatment at the GW Medical Center as the director of breast imaging and intervention, professor of radiology and vice-chair of the Department of Radiology.
For cancer patients in Washington, the GW Medical Center is an important resource with outstanding clinical facilities, a rapidly expanding research agenda and an Office of Cancer Survivorship to support the diverse needs of cancer survivors. Using a comprehensive approach, the center provides groundbreaking biomedical and clinical research, high-quality educational programs, exceptional patient care and effective community outreach.
