Dean’s Scholars in Shakespeare Program

The Dean's Scholars in Shakespeare Program offers a co-curricular program for those interested in the performance and study of the works of William Shakespeare. A select group of freshmen have the opportunity to explore their interests through specially-tailored introductory courses, guest artists and lecturers, performances and programs provided by The Folger Shakespeare Library, The Shakespeare Theatre and the GW Department of Theatre and Dance.

D.C. Shakespeare Opportunities

Washington, DC, offers one of the finest arenas in which to study the works of Shakespeare. The Folger Shakespeare Library is a world-class research center, home to the world's largest and finest collection of Shakespeare materials and other rare Renaissance books, manuscripts, and works of art. With an annual three-play season, the Folger Theater has earned a reputation for producing innovative interpretations of Shakespeare's works as well as his contemporaries, and has been recognized for its excellence by the Helen Hayes Awards. In addition, the Shakespeare Theatre Company has become a major international player in the presentation and preservation of classic theatre.

Program Components

During the second semester, students have the opportunity to engage in one-credit courses comprised of trips to London during Spring Break. While in the United Kingdom, students meet with the head of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and visit the Stratford Festival Theatre – home to The Royal Shakespeare Company, the world's most prestigious Shakespeare theater company. Additionally, they participate in the famous Shakespeare’s London walk and take a day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. The course meets periodically before and after the trip experience and is open to all students in the program.

Opportunities for Shakespearean study abroad also are available during students’ junior or senior years through GW's London Study Center and our special relationships with the University of London (King's College and Royal Holloway College). At the end of the semester, Shakespeare performances are produced by the Dean's Scholars.
