6-Week Program

July 2 – August 14, 2009

Summer Scholars' 6-Week Program is open to rising 12th graders. Scholars enroll in college courses with GW undergraduates and earn college credit.

Writing Seminar
3 Credits

All 6-week program pre-college students are enrolled in this seminar. The course focuses on developing and refining the critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are necessary for successful academic discourse during college and in professional life. Drawing upon the history, culture and politics of Washington, DC, students work on individual writing assignments and collaborate on group research, culminating in a multi-media presentation to peers.

Elective Course
3 Credits

Choose an introductory elective course and study alongside GW undergraduates. Classes generally range in size from 14 to 25 students, with focused interaction and intellectual engagement. Every effort is made to place students in their first choice courses, depending on space and prerequisites. These courses are graded for credit and establish an official GW academic record. Although GW credits are typically transferable to other colleges and universities, you must check with the receiving institution to determine whether the credits will transfer and how they will apply to degree requirements.

Faculty and Staff

The George Washington University is the largest private institution of higher education in the nation’s capital. GW is among the top 100 research universities in the country receiving federal funding and is second nationally in the number of alumni appointed as ambassadors and Foreign Service officials. GW graduates make up the ranks of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman and Fulbright scholars. The national media turn frequently to GW’s distinguished faulty for expert opinions in law, politics, international affairs, education, healthcare and engineering. Faculty members not only are actively engaged in research and teaching, but they are also leaders who help shape national and international policy.
