Timelines and Deadlines

New graduate students generally begin course work in either the fall semester (late August) or the spring semester (mid January). Some programs admit students in only one semester per year. Other programs consider applicants for both fall and spring and, in limited cases, applicants may be considered for summer admission (mid May).

Admission deadlines for GW graduate programs can vary by program and degree, so you should check the individual Admission Requirements by Program page for deadline dates and available entry terms. Unless an earlier deadline is indicated for a specific program of study, the following general deadlines apply:

  • All applicants applying to a doctoral program or who wish to be considered for a fellowship or assistantship:

Fall admission:

January 15

Spring admission:

September 1

  • International applicants to master’s or graduate certificate programs who are requesting an I-20 or DS-2019 but do NOT wish to be considered for a fellowship or assistantship:

Fall admission:

March 15

Spring admission:

September 1

If a deadline falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) or a GW holiday, applications will be accepted the next business day.

PLEASE NOTE that many GW programs will consider late applications for admission and financial assistance if space and funding are available. Although you should make every effort to meet the stated application deadline, if you are unable to do so, discuss your situation with the graduate admissions director for the school to which you are applying. If space is not available in the program for the upcoming term, you may apply now for a subsequent semester.
