International Credentials
A transcript, detailed marks certificate or comparable document showing all course work, grades and proof of earned degrees must be submitted for each institution attended. This is required for all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. If a separate proof of degree is needed, it must include an official certification by the institution where the degree was obtained and list the title of the degree and the month and year of graduation. Please note that official records are defined as original documents issued by the institution (not photocopies) that bear the actual signature of the registrar and the seal of the issuing institution. Transcripts must be forwarded in their original, sealed envelopes.
Unless academic records and diplomas are routinely issued in English by the institution, the official records, in their original language, must be submitted along with an authorized, complete and exact English translation. Translations alone will not be accepted. Both documents must be certified by an official government agency or authorized official.
If the institution at which the courses were taken issues one official copy of this record and no other, a copy of the certificate may be submitted, provided it is certified by an official government agency or authorized official. Do not send a document to GW that cannot be replaced. Please note that the admission office will ask to see the original document, after arrival at the University and prior to enrolling for course work.
If you are applying to a program in the College of Professional Studies or the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, all international transcripts must be submitted to an approved, accredited independent evaluation agency prior to submission. Be sure to request a detailed evaluation that includes all course titles, credit hours, grades, recommended United States degree equivalency, grade-point average (GPA), and date of degree conferral. A list of acceptable foreign credential evaluation services is available on the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) Web site www.naces.org/members.htm.
