PETER
PACE, MS ’72, PREPARES FOR A CHALLENGE
On April
22, President George W. Bush demonstrated his confidence in the “can
do” spirit of the Marine Corp when he nominated General Peter Pace,
MS Admin ’72, for the position of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff. As chairman, Pace will be the main military adviser to the president
and the defense secretary. If confirmed, the general will be the first Marine
Corps officer to hold this position.

General
Peter Pace, MS Admin ’72
Pace
attended the Naval Academy, graduating in 1967. He has enjoyed an impressive
military career. A rifle platoon leader in Vietnam in the late ’60s
and a commanding officer in Somalia in the ’90s, Pace understands
the importance of duty to his country. He is familiar with the challenges
inherent in his new position and is up to the task.
A White House insider and highly decorated officer with over eight stars,
ribbons, and medals, Pace comes highly recommended by Defense Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld. His Senate confirmation is expected to be straightforward.
President Bush affirmed his confidence in the general during the nomination
announcement saying, “I’ve come to rely on Pete Pace’s
wisdom, judgment, and sense of humor. I will continue to rely on those
qualities as he serves our nation as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff.”
When asked to comment on his nomination, Pace, 59, stated that he is
humbled by what he knows are the “formidable challenges”
ahead. Even with these challenges, he is exhilarated about “the
opportunity, if confirmed by the Senate, to continue to serve this great
nation.”
