This month’s profile features an Elliott School of International Affairs alumnus from the classes of 1966 and 1968, former Ambassador Edward “Skip” Gnehm. Gnehm was the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait, Australia, and, most recently, Jordan, and raised the American flag over the U.S. embassy after the liberation of Kuwait. He has been appointed Shapiro Professor in the Elliott School; this appointment will last two years and began this past September. He also will serve as the co-director of the school’s undergraduate program in international affairs.

Throughout his impressive career, Gnehm has remained active at GW, having served both on the Board of Trustees, and as the vice president of the George Washington Alumni Association. Gnehm has remained active because he loves the school, and he appreciates the experience and education GW provided. Continuing in the family tradition, Gnehm’s son is a student at GW; he received his BA previously, and is now working on his MBA.

“One thing that always stood out over my years in the Foreign Service was the prominence of the Elliott School in preparing myself and other students for careers in international affairs,” Edward Gnehm says.
