MESSAGE FROM MORY

Greetings fellow alumni—

It’s been one year since I started as the executive director of Alumni Programs, and it has been a busy year! GW’s alumni program has grown and improved over this past year, and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the actions we have taken to enhance alumni life.

One of the most exciting changes, as mentioned in last month’s Cable, is the newly redesigned GW Alumni Online Community. The new Online Community is your one stop for all alumni programs, benefits, and services information. We will continue to enhance features of the Online Community in the coming months. Check it out at www.alumni.gwu.edu. Don’t forget to register for the online directory.

We continue to be inspired by alumni volunteers, particularly those leading our regional chapters. Over the past year, the regional chapters in New York, Boston, and South Florida have continued to grow and offer new programs. Volunteers are now forming chapters in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Each of these chapters held interesting events this past year, including networking meetings, political panels, and social occasions. In the coming year we hope to launch chapters in Philadelphia and Atlanta and to expand our international affiliations.

Our alumni education programs have enjoyed continued success; we hosted the second annual Women’s Leadership Conference in the spring, and the Alumni Course Audit Program continues to expand class offerings each semester. Look for the Fall 2004 Alumni Course Audit Program information below. We also have re-established the alumni travel program, and we plan to implement a lecture series featuring prominent alumni and begin a series entitled “Politics and Port,” an informal gathering for alumni to discuss current affairs. Stay tuned for more information as these programs evolve.

Another area that we have developed over the past year is student-alumni programming at GW. We have developed a partnership with Class Council to sponsor events designed to promote student-alumni interaction, and our Senior Class Gift Campaign last year was the most successful to date. Additionally, we have worked very closely with the George Washington Alumni Association over the past year to enhance our alumni awards programs: the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awards, the Alumni Service Awards, and the GWAA Prizes. In the future we will work with the GWAA to offer greater opportunities for alumni to volunteer and connect with GW.

Finally, I look forward to another exciting Colonials Weekend, October 15-17. We have introduced some new events this year, which are described below, and the event is sure to be a success. I hope that you will attend!

These are just some of the efforts that the Office of Alumni Programs is making to connect with alumni. We hope you will take advantage of some of the great opportunities to interact with alumni and current students, and stay involved with your alma mater.

Sincerely,

Scott M. Mory
Executive Director of Alumni Programs
