Greetings fellow
alumni!
Spring has sprung here in Foggy Bottom and this is my favorite time of
year here on campus. Our men's and women's basketball teams are wrapping
up their seasons, and our community is as excited as ever about both team's
performances. Students across campus have just finished elections for
Student Association, Program Board, and Marvin Center Governing Board,
and this year's elections were as contentious as ever! GW is in the process
of accepting next year's freshman class—GW recently received its
20,000th application—and this class is among the most qualified
ever admitted to the University—and that goes for our J.D., M.D.,
and other graduate programs as well, all of which continue to climb in
stature.
We were in Miami with President Trachtenberg for a reception with the
South Florida Regional Alumni Chapter last Thursday, and we had a great
turnout! One local alumnus, Bert Lopez ('87), is aide to a member of the
Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners, and thanks to his efforts, last
Thursday was declared George Washington University Day in Miami-Dade County.
President Trachtenberg was presented with the key to the county! It was
truly moving to see the pride on the faces of our local alumni as the
declaration was read describing GW's accomplishments -- and we alumni
can all share in that.
Over the next few months, please pay attention to these pages for information
on upcoming programs. This summer we'll be relaunching our alumni online
community. We're well under way for planning Colonials Weekend 2004 --
October 15-17 -- and all alumni are invited to attend. We've got several
new education programs planned -- including programs around each of the
upcoming political conventions and at least one travel program. And finally,
we're proud to welcome Philadelphia, South Florida, Atlanta, and Los Angeles
to our family of regional alumni chapters -- we look forward to working
with our volunteer leadership in these areas, as well as in New York and
Boston, to continue improving the relationship between the University
and its alumni.
Best wishes, and stay in touch!
Sincerely,

Scott M. Mory
