General Information

Degree-seeking students who are currently enrolled are eligible to register in category order as outlined in the semester registration schedule below, except for a few selected programs, consortium courses, closed classes, or classes requiring departmental or instructor approval (see Functions Not Available on GWeb for registration information regarding these classes).

You may register for classes on GWeb. To access GWeb, go to the myGW portal and click on "gweb info systems".

Specific categories of students are given priority on certain days of the registration period. Once eligible to register, you may continue to register or adjust your program through the end of the Priority Registration period, except as noted (by the # symbol) below. You may register ONLY on or after the day(s) for your category. Priority registration for Degree-seeking students begins at 7:00 am on April 1, 2008, and ends at 8:00 pm on April 10, 2008.

General registration for Degree-seeking students begins at 7:00 am on April 11, 2008, and ends at 8:00 pm on August 31, 2008. General registration for Non-Degree students begins at 7:00 am on August 4, 2008, and ends at 8:00 pm on August 31, 2008. (For general information for Non-Degree students, click here).  Late Registration Fees will be charged starting September 2, 2008.

The GWeb info system will be available from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, including weekends, except for the following holidays:  May 26, July 4, and September 1. On the following days of incoming freshman registration in June 2008, the system will only be available as listed:

  • Thursday, June 5: 10am-2pm
  • Friday, June 6: 2pm-6pm
  • Saturday, June 7: 11am-3pm
  • Monday, June 9: 8am-12pm
  • Tuesday, June 10: 3pm-7pm

Occasionally the system may be made unavailable during regular hours for system maintenance and upgrades. These periods will be advertised in advance on the Office of the Registrar homepage.

Registration assistance is available 8:30 am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday, when the University is open. Should you have any questions or difficulty with GWeb registration, please call (202) 994-4900 during office hours.

New students who have been admitted to degree programs for the upcoming semester should check with their school for information about orientation and registration.  Click here for important registration information for international students.

You are encouraged to consider taking classes offered at the Mount Vernon Campus. Please keep in mind that traffic and weather conditions affect the operations of The Vern Express, the shuttle service connecting the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses. The one-way trip typically takes 10-13 minutes, although on weekdays from 7:00 am to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, during the rush hours, the one-way trip may take 15-20 minutes. As such, at all times you are encouraged to allow yourself at least 30 minutes to travel between the campuses and to your classroom, as students have found doing so usually allows for an on-time arrival for class. For complete information on The Vern Express, visit Mount Vernon Campus Life.

Late Registration/Program Adjustment

Late registration takes place from September 2, 2008, through September 13, 2008, during the same hours of operation as noted in the General Information section.  During the late registration period, an $80.00 Late Fee is assessed for any initial registration.  Registration ends at 8:00 pm on September 13, 2008.

Beginning with the first week of classes, students who wish to add a course(s) and drop a course(s) as an even exchange may do so without financial loss if these transaction requests are made during the same calendar week for an equal number of credit hours.  Please be advised that individual program adjustments may incur tuition charges and/or fees if they are not even exchanges, or involve courses other than those at the Foggy Bottom or Mount Vernon campuses.

Program Adjustments after the Second Week of Classes

Students who wish to drop, add or withdraw from a course must complete a Registration Transaction Form; obtain approval from the instructor or department (only to ADD courses); and submit the completed form to the Dean's Office of the school in which the student is enrolled.  A note from an instructor is NOT an acceptable form of dropping or withdrawing.  Registration Transaction Forms are available at all Deans’ Offices and the Office of the Registrar. The deadline for dropping a course without academic penalty is the end of the fourth week during the Fall and Spring semesters.  A course dropped during the first four weeks of classes will not appear on a student’s transcript.  A course dropped after the fourth week but before the end of the eighth week will be assigned a grade of W (Authorized Withdrawal). Any withdrawals after the eighth week of classes require a petition to your academic Dean's office.

Withdrawals and Refunds (except Law School Students)

Courses dropped NO LATER THAN AUGUST 31, 2008, will have 100% of the tuition charges cancelled. Courses dropped AFTER AUGUST 31, 2008, are subject to the refund schedule, which governs the prorated cancellation of semester tuition charges in cases of program adjustment (see below) or withdrawal:

On or before the end of the first week of classes (By September 6) 90%
On or before the end of the second week of classes (By September 13)  60%
On or before the end of the third week of classes (By September 19) 40%
On or before the end of the fourth week of classes (By September 26) 25%
After the fourth week of classes None

Through the Spring 2008 semester, courses dropped on or before the end of the first week of classes received an 80% tuition refund.

Students whose accounts reflect overpayments may complete a "Request for Refund" at Colonial Central beginning the first day of classes.

Regulations governing student withdrawals as they relate to residence halls and food service charges are contained in lease agreements and/or contracts and are not governed by the above refund schedule.

For more information on Withdrawals and Refunds, click here.

Complete Withdrawal

A Degree-seeking student who wishes to withdraw from ALL courses during a given semester must complete a Complete Withdrawal Form and submit it to the Dean's Office.  Forms are available at all Deans’ Offices and the Office of the Registrar.

The deadline for complete withdrawal from ALL courses without academic penalty is the end of the eighth week of classes.  After the deadline, program changes are not possible unless the student presents a petition to the Dean’s Office and receives permission.

All charges for courses from which the student withdraws are subject to the refund policy listed under the Tuition Rates, Fees, and Financial Regulations.

Additional Fees Assessed During the Late Registration/Program Adjustment Period

Beginning with the first week of classes, students who wish to drop a course(s) will incur financial loss unless an even exchange of credits (adding the same number of credits that are dropped) is made during the same calendar week. Please be advised that individual programs may incur tuition charges and/or fees if they are not even exchanges, or involve courses other than those at the Foggy Bottom or Mount Vernon campuses.

In addition, an initial registration during the late registration period will have an $80 charge.
