For the first time since 1952 a sitting president or vice president was not a candidate for nomination of either major party.

Where We Are: After several years of pre-campaign activity and five months of primaries and caucuses, the national nominating conventions are less than two months off.  The presumptive Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, survived a campaign implosion in mid-2007 and went on to win the majority of delegates in a relatively easy manner by the March 4 primaries.  The Democrats' titanic struggle between Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama carried through to the last primaries on June 3, with the candidates fighting for every delegate; Clinton finally endorsed Obama on June 7.  Now the campaigns are gearing up for the conventions and the fall campaign.
