Maida Withers (B.A. Brigham Young University, M.S. University of Utah)
Professor of Dance at GW since 1964. She has developed and administered
the BA, MA, and MFA dance programs at GW. She is known for her research
in dance and choreography. She currently teaches TrDa 174, Advanced
Post Modern Dance Technique; TrDa 185, Trends in Performance Art; TrDa
180 Dance and Movement Improvisation; TrDa 182, Dance Composition; TrDa
184, Choreographic Projects as well as directing and choreographing
for MainStage DanceWorks.
Maida is the Artistic Director and founder of Maida Withers and The
Dance Construction Company, a not-for-profit arts organization created
in 1974 to produce original dance works for stage, sites and video in
a collaborative process with visual and performing artists. Maida has
created over 100 dance works, many of which are full-evening
works. A native of Utah, Withers and The Dance Construction Company
have toured throughout the US, and internationally to Brazil (Earth
Summit '92), Mexico, Germany, Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong,
The Netherlands, France, Venezuela, Poland, Russia, and
other locations. Video works by Withers have been shown
in Germany at IMZ, the Women in Film series at the Kennedy Center, the
DC Independent Film Festival, and festivals in Australia,
Utah, and elsewhere.
Maida is a leader in the area of dance and technology, social and political
commentary through post modern performances, and dance on camera. Her
most recent film, Dance of the Auroras – Fire in the Sky, was commissioned
by Research Channel and features the integration of science, art, and
technology in performance. |
