PROGRAM
This course and research seminar is designed to enable participants to gain a deeper understanding of the role of education in fostering and inhibiting the sustainable development of education and social change in Turkey, and offers graduate students the opportunity to gain insight into the roles of education in a modern Islamic society undergoing rapid economic and social transformation.
The main focus of the course is a 16-day travel seminar to Turkey, where we spend one week in Istanbul. We will work with faculty at Istanbul’s prestigious Bogazici University, attending specially arranged lectures and lunches, where we will have a chance to interact with faculty more personally. There will be time for school visits and time to carry out independent research on projects started before the trip and completed on return to the U.S. The Istanbul portion of the trip is followed by a seven-day study tour to Ankara, Cappadocia, Konya, and Ephesus, where we will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about education, culture, history, and reforms in Turkey. Periodic group discussions will allow seminar participants to process what they are seeing and to understand the ways different group members are interpreting the issues raised in the seminar.
The course consists of:
• Five pre-travel class sessions and participation in the 16-day study tour.
• Preparation of an in-depth research paper or project using resources from class sessions, readings, and the travel seminar. A substantial outline of the project is due before departure, in order that participants will have a good background in some aspect of Turkey, so students will be able to make best use of their limited independent research time in Istanbul, and to provide a “base line” of information that can be checked with “informants” in Turkey. Students may want to prepare projects related to the specialties of Bogazici faculty who will be talking with us.
• Upon return from Turkey, a de-briefing and sharing of research results will be provided for the community.
For more information, please view the predeparture class schedule, draft travel itinerary, and course syllabus.
COSTS
The cost of the program is estimated at $2,828 for three credits tuition and study abroad insurance. International airfare, the land travel package (estimated around $1,875), and personal expenses are not included.
