PROGRAM
This specialized course will examine the impact of leadership, culture, and communication on organizational success. Using Summer Olympic Games Organizing Committees (OOCs) and other multinational organizations as foci, we will study the role that leadership, power, influence, communication, and culture, including organizational, societal, and national cultures, have on how organizations and the people within them function. The course will include classroom experiences, an international study tour, and a post-tour research paper. The classroom portion (Spring semester 2008) will include readings, discussions, and guest lecturers on the topics of leadership, culture, communication, and organizational processes, applying that knowledge to the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee (BOCOG) and other multinational organizations. Site visits to organizations in the Washington DC area will occur during the Spring semester. During the Spring, each student will be developing a research proposal and a data collection plan for the study tour portion of the trip. Following the classroom experience, we will go on a study tour (May 2008) to Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, and Suzhou in China, visiting BOCOG and the Chinese locations for the organizations we visited in the United States and collecting data for their research projects. Upon return, students will apply what they learned in a research paper to be completed in the Summer 2008. Note: ONLY students who participated in Part I of the course offered in Spring 2008 may enroll in this summer program.

The cost of the program is estimated at $966 for one credit tuition and study abroad insurance. The professor estimates out of pocket expenses (airfare, in-country transportation, accommodations, group site visits, and most meals) for the course to be around $3,550.
