SMPP 297.60 (3 credits)
Professors Tim Fort and John Forrer
PROGRAM
This course addresses a range of recent, current and emerging issues in the various global institutional frameworks for corporate governance and the management of corporate responsibility. The course introduces and provides an opportunity for cross-cultural comparison of key concepts in corporate governance and raises issues about how successful different approaches to corporate governance are in balancing the interests of managers and the variety of stakeholder groups. The social contract underlying the US institutional framework is compared with a European view of the social contract, and an analytical framework is provided to make similar cross-cultural comparisons with other areas of the world. Company visits and guest lectures will be integrated into the class such as US companies in Europe (Johnson and Johnson, Chiquita, IMB, Microsoft), and/or European companies (Shell, ABN-Amro, Heineken, Philips, Solvay Chemical and Pharma, Ikea, ABB, Unilever).
COSTS
The cost of the program is estimated at $3,853 for three credits tuition, study abroad insurance, lodging, & in-country transportation. International airfare and personal expenses are not included. The professor estimates other out of pocket expenses could be around $650.
