Visiting Scholars

Each year The Sigur Center hosts Visiting Scholars and Visiting Research Associates from around the world, who are selected on a highly competitive basis to conduct research related to Asia.

Visiting Scholars are usually faculty members at universities, analysts at research institutions, or mid-career government officials.

Visiting Research Associates are usually doctoral candidates.

The Sigur Center normally provides shared use of an office; access to a computer and the Internet; borrowing privileges at GW's Gelman library; limited telephone, fax, and photocopying privileges; and an opportunity to interact with other scholars focusing on Asia.

DEADLINES: There are two deadlines every year.

April 1

October 1

The visa application process will take at least one month to complete, so please keep that in mind when considering your start date. We will try to work with applicants' deadlines, including those imposed by funding organizations, so please let us know in your application if you have any such requirements.

Proposed research terms are usually 3-12 months long. Please clearly state your desired term in your introductory letter, as described above.

Applications will be evaluated by The Elliott School of International Affairs and The Sigur Center. If accepted, a bench fee of up to $1000 per month may apply.

We welcome applications from candidates all over the world. Once the Sigur Center has agreed to host a scholar, and the scholar has accepted the invitation, it is expected that the scholar will withdraw any other applications to potential host institutions.

POSCO TJ Park Foundation NGO Fellowship Program

The 2008-2009 POSCO TJ Park Foundation NGO Fellowship application period is now closed. If you have questions regarding this program, please click here.

The Sigur Center is proud to announce its participation in an exciting new program: bringing members of South Korean non governmental organizations (NGOs) to the United States for research and study as fellows. The $2 million program, co-ordinated by Stanford University, involves four other leading North American universities. It is possible thanks to the generous support of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 1971 by Tae Joon Park to contribute to Korean and Asian development in a spirit of social responsibility.

The POSCO TJ Park Foundation Fellowship Program aims to increase the interaction between members of the American and Korean NGO communities. GWU forms part of a consortium that includes Stanford, Columbia University , Indiana University, and the University of British Columbia. Each university will host two fellows each year for five years starting September 2006. The member universities will also hold an annual conference to highlight the scholars’ research.
