Asbestos Awareness
This training presents basic information about the dangers of asbestos fibers in buildings, the methods available to control hazards, and the actions one must take and avoid when working in an area known or presumed to contain asbestos. It is designed for employees who will not directly handle asbestos material, but who may encounter it in the routine course of their work, such as in Buildings Maintenance, Housekeeping, Grounds employees and University Police Officers. Initial and refresher training is mandatory. This training is offered in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101

Bloodborne Pathogens
The Bloodborne Pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030, is designed to protect health care workers and other affected workers at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis B virus. Occupational exposure means reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of an employee's duties. In addition to health care workers, police, housekeeping, plumbers, athletic trainers, EMT's and laboratory personnel could be included. Annual training required.

Confined Space
Entry into certain types of confined spaces, such as manholes, trenches and pipe chases, may pose significant risk to workers. An inventory of such spaces has been developed and employees who may need to enter these spaces should be trained in the safe work practices and personal protective equipment required. Training must be provided prior to entry into a confined space and repeated whenever there are changes in hazards. BC employees should also be aware that hired contractors who work in confined spaces be made aware of associated hazards. (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146)

Van Driver Safety
The Van Driver Safety lesson provides instruction and guidelines for helping students recognize potentially unsafe actions and attitudes that could result in accidents. A van's physical characteristics will affect its handling and stopping distances, therefore the student will review the impact the center of gravity has on handling and how weight affects acceleration and braking. Van's also have somewhat unique visibility problems and blind spots that are addressed as part of this course.

Advanced Driving Strategies
Advanced Driving Strategies provides basic information to help students recognize accident causation and avoidance. This program goes beyond the basic "rules of the road" to sharpen the skills, knowledge and judgment of veteran drivers. Timely issues like road rage and cell phone are addressed in this course and provide veteran drivers the knowledge to handle these distractions safely.

Fire Prevention & Protection
This training session will discuss the various types of extinguishers found on campus. Advantages and disadvantages of each type will be discussed. Proper operation of various extinguishers and the types of fires they are best suited for will be discussed and demonstrated. Basic fire chemistry and fire prevention will also be presented. Training is available upon request and tailored to specific groups per department. (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157)

Hazard Communication
The Hazard Communication standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, is also referred to as HazCom. Employers shall provide employees with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of initial assignment and whenever a new physical or health hazard the employees have not been previously trained about is introduced into their work area. Training will enable employees to obtain the necessary information off of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Hazardous Waste Awareness
This workshop will cover the procedures associated with the management and safe disposal of hazardous waste on campus. Segregation, labeling, containers, and weekly inspections will be discussed. Required training is provided to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and laboratory technicians in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Earth & Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Anthropology, and Environmental Engineering. Students are welcome. Initial and annual refresher trainings.

Laboratory Safety
The Laboratory Safety Standard training program, 29 CFR 1910.1450, covers policies applicable to all employees and students engaged in the laboratory use of hazardous chemicals. Training topics include descriptions of chemical hazards in the workplace, permissible exposure limits, symptoms of overexposure and methods to detect and reduce hazardous exposure. Required training is provided to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and laboratory technicians in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Earth & Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Anthropology, and Environmental Engineering. Students are welcome. Initial and annual refresher trainings.

Laser Safety
Laser radiation workers are required to receive laser safety training prior to working with lasers. Fundamentals of laser operations, effects of laser radiation on the eye and skin, non radiation hazards, laser system classifications, control measures, management and employee responsibilities will be covered. Training is provided by designated personnel in the laboratories. (ANSI Z136.1)

Lead Based Paint Awareness
All employees who may be exposed to lead-based paint hazards are required to receive lead paint awareness training. Awareness training is mandatory for all maintenance and housekeeping personnel. Employees who may be exposed to lead above OSHA limits are required to receive more extensive training.

Lockout / Tagout
29 CFR 1910.147, the Control of Hazardous Energy (also known as lockout / tagout) standard established safety requirements to control hazardous energy sources with lockout/tagout procedures in order to prevent injuries to personnel servicing equipment. Training is provided to two populations, those who must install the locks and tags prior to servicing equipment and those whose work may be conducted near such equipment. These two groups of users are defined as authorized users and affected users. Initial training. Retraining required when there is a change in job assignment, machines, equipment, processes or in the energy control procedures. Retraining is also required when annual program audits reveal deficiencies. New employees should contact ORM to schedule initial training. Authorized user training will be provided by a third-party training facilitator.

Mercury-Containing Lamps
Mercury, a heavy metal, is toxic to the human nervous system and children and unborn fetuses are more susceptible to the negative effects of mercury. Fluorescent and HID lamps contain mercury. It is the goal of the University to keep these lamps out of municipal landfills and incinerators by the proper handling and disposal of mercury containing lamps.

Personal Protective Equipment
Hard hats, goggles, face shields, earplugs, steel-toed shoes, respirators. What do all these items have in common? They are all various forms of personal protective equipment (PPE). OSHA's Personal Protective Equipment standards require employers to furnish and require employees to use suitable protective equipment where there is a "reasonable probability" that injury can be prevented by such equipment. The standards also set provisions for specific equipment and training. This session covers when PPE is necessary; what PPE is necessary; how to properly don, doff, adjust, and wear PPE; the limitations of the PPE; and, the proper care, maintenance, useful life and disposal of the PPE. Initial training required. Retraining required when there is a change in the workplace render previous training obsolete; or changes in the types of PPE to be used render previous training obsolete; or inadequacies in an affected employee's knowledge or use of assigned PPE indicate that the employee has not retained the requisite understanding or skill. New employees should contact ORM to schedule initial training.

Respiratory Protection
In certain situations, employees may need to wear respiratory protection in order to safely perform their jobs. If an employee's job task requires the use of a respirator, the employee will not conduct this work until completion of the respiratory protection program. The program includes training, selection and fit testing of an appropriate respirator and an annual qualifying medical exam. Bring your respirator to each session. Annual training, medical exams and fit testing required. (29 CFR 1910.134)
