Chemical Fume Hood Information

Chemical fume hoods capture, contain, and expel emissions generated by hazardous chemicals. In general, it is a good idea to conduct all laboratory experiments in a fume hood. In working with hazardous chemicals, the release of emissions cannot always be controlled; therefore, the fume hood offers an extra measure of protection.

Before use, check to see that your hood has a certification sticker. This will tell you the date of the most recent hood evaluation. If your hood has not been certified, call the Office of Risk Management at (202) 994-3265.

If the fume hood in your lab does not appear to be in good working condition, contact Emergency and Minor Maintenance at (202) 994-6706.
