MEET YOUR CANDIDATES!

Nominees for President

Busi Langa

In this coming election year, you have two choices for leadership: Hilary or Barack. (Unless you’re a Republican, then skip this paragraph.) Well, why make a choice when you don’t have to? I’m running for President of the Public Policy Student Association to save you from making that hard decision- especially as we approach finals. As a young, feisty, black female, I bring you the best of both worlds: leadership with color, seniority, eloquence, and intelligence. What more could you ask for?

In all seriousness, I am keen to grab the reigns of the PPSA. Not because I think I will be able to make unrealistic changes to our program or drastic improvements over the work of the existing board but because I do believe that I am indeed qualified and capable. Throughout high school and my years at Purdue University, I was active in a variety of leadership positions ranging from athletics to student government to academic honor societies. As you might expect these positions have given me experience in running fundraisers, organizing student activities, meeting with administrators and speaking in front of large groups. Moreover, as cliché as it does sound, I am a people person. Although it can be frustrating, I do enjoy working with people to manage ideas and construct useful solutions.

Currently, I am volunteering as a tutor at Anacostia High School but I would like to do more, specifically with and for my colleagues at TSPPPA. So vote Billary or Harack or just Busi!

Kyle Stearns

I’m a 2006 graduate from the University of Kansas, I majored in communication studies, with a minor in leadership studies. I was involved with various student organizations and would enjoy the opportunity to carry on this involvement through the board. PPSA plays an important role to the success of the students in the program, and is why I want to be apart of the organization. As PPSA President I would commit myself to continuing the success of PPSA. Clearly, the social events are the most enjoyable and well attended activities of PPSA, and I want to continue this trend and work to make them even better next year. I also believe that we can improve on our community service events and our career development opportunities within PPSA as well. The current website of PPSA is inadequate for the services it could provide to our members, and could also prove as a powerful recruiting tool for potential students in the future. As President I would explore how best to upgrade and improve the content on the PPSA ebsite. Along with this I would also consider trying to find new ways for fundraising, outside of current members giving more money, in an attempt to reduce dues or fees for events. I also would like for both PPSA and MPAA to explore a possible philanthropic event in the future as well. Serving on PPSA would be an amazing experience and I would work to ensure that all the events were fun and meaningful.

Nominees for Vice President

Matt Kazan

I know I’m not running for Vice President of the United States, but compared to passed V.P.’s I still match up pretty well. For this reason I should do a great job as Vice President of the Public Policy Student Association. First of all, I’ve never shot anyone. You wouldn’t think that would be a huge factor in determining a Vice President, but ask Dick Cheney, who shot his hunting partner in 2006 (though for you Daily Show fans I do have a man sized safe in my apartment, or Aaron Burr, who shot Alexander Hamilton in 1804 (come on you’ve got to like a guy who has a Aaron Burr reference up his sleeve…). I’ve always done my taxes unlike Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon’s Vice President who resigned because of tax fraud. I do know how to spell P-O-T-A-T-O (I’m looking at you Vice President Dan Quayle) I’ve never won the Nobel Peace Prize, but Al Gore did that after his term so I still have time.

As you can tell from my photo, I love the Denver Broncos, dogs and have no good pictures of myself to submit!

Seriously though, I’m running for PPSA Vice President because I’ve met so many outstanding people here at George Washington. We have an outstanding opportunity to apply the enormous amounts of talent, intelligence and energy that all of you posses to not only improve our own George Washington community, but the entire Washington D.C. community as well. I would be honored to be a part of that.

Ellen Treimel

I am running for the position of Vice President of the Public Policy Student Association board because I believe that I can make a positive contribution to the organization by taking on a leadership role. I am already involved as a tutor at Anacostia High School and as a graduate assistant in the department. I enjoy working with the faculty and students in the program, and would like to enrich people’s time at TSPPPA through helping to coordinate social events, volunteer events, and career building opportunities that help give people the well-rounded experience they sought when choosing to attend GWU.

I would bring considerable experience to the PPSA board. As an undergraduate at NYU, I was president of the campus chapter of the National Organization for Women and helped to establish the chapter as independent from the New York City chapter of NOW. I also co-chaired Pride Month my senior year, overseeing the organization, promotion and success of a month-long series of events to raise awareness about and celebrate the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. These two experiences familiarized me with managing the tight budgets that student groups have to work with on college campuses, and how to improve the student experience on a campus in the middle of a city.

I am willing to dedicate as much time and energy as necessary to help the board continue to enhance the experience of all MPP students, and that is why you should vote for me to be Vice-President of PPSA.

Nominee for Treasurer

Adrianne Berman

My name is Adrianne Berman and I am running for Treasurer of PPSA. I am committed to making PPSA a financially stable organization that will be able to fund great programs that are educational, charitable, career-advancing, beneficial, and most importantly, fun! I have always been great with numbers and finances, which is part of the reason why I currently work for a financial regulatory agency in the Department of Treasury. There, I assist my team in helping to manage our hundreds of millions of dollars in assets (we’re not appropriated, thus, we have assets). We recommend and help decide how to spend this money wisely. So, if I can be an active member of a team that manages hundreds of millions of dollars on a daily basis, I think that I can manage a few thousand here. I also have an undergraduate minor in economics and have picked up basic accounting skills at my job. Overall, through great management of our finances, I know that I can help make the 2008 PPSA board the best PPSA board in TSPPPA history! Vote Adrianne for Treasurer!

Nominees for Secretary

Tom Dermody

Hi everyone, I’m Tom. I have 250 words to try to convince you to vote for me but I only need three: Vote for me! You can continue reading if you have the time or desire.

I am running for the position of Secretary on the 2008 PPSA Board because I want to help our community. I strongly encourage all of you to take the time to vote and be an active member of our community. We are a small, relatively close knit group of students and I have no doubt that anyone of us could successfully perform the duties required of any of the officers on the PPSA Board. I believe that it is important for all of us to be active members of our small community; to be part of something great. Plus, though labor intensive, it sounds like it would be a lot of fun and very rewarding. The nice thing about this election is that there are no bad choices. If you vote for me great and I thank you for your support. However, if you choose not to cast your vote in my favor, I have no doubt that who ever you support will do an excellent job.

Bonnie Fagan

Dear PPSA Members,

If you don’t know who I am, I hope to meet you one day. In the meantime, allow me to paint you a picture…..I have red hair (but way fake), I’m from California, have an indelibly loud laugh, was a liger during retreat, and I’m enjoying classes but honestly can’t wait until winter break. My name is Bonnie Fagan and I’m running for Secretary.

If elected, I promise to banish the narcs from campus and make the lunch period longer. Whoops, sorry…I have always wanted to run for student office. In all seriousness, I hope to help make PPSA the best representation of our program and enrich students’ experiences in TSPPPA and the Washington, D.C. community. As Secretary, I want to help promote the opportunities and events that serve to advance our academic and career goals and that challenge us to be well-rounded leaders. After all, that’s what we’re here for, right? Because these goals are so important to me, I want to have a hand in shaping them and encouraging others to take advantage of them. I am also confident in my record keeping abilities for the board, as I am probably the most obsessively organized and meticulous person you will ever meet.

Overall, I’m an outgoing, friendly person who wants to get more involved in TSPPPPPPPA. I know that I will do an awesome job. Please vote for me for Secretary!!!

Thank you,
Bonnie Fagan

Nominee for Social Coordinator

Aidan Russell

I chose to run for social chair and feel that I would do a great job representing PPSA in this position because I am organized, have past event-planning experience (with Amnesty International and various undergraduate organization) and would love to work my networking skills to get our program the hook-up at all of the hottest/most entertaining events in the city. I feel that one of the most unique aspects of TSPPPA is the bond that students form with one another and with the faculty. It is through our numerous PPSA social programs that our public policy community is able to form such close relationships and friendships.

I would love to have the opportunity to be involved in the planning and organization of the New Student Orientation, the Annual Retreat and the Fall Ball. As for the happy hours, considering I have tried not to miss one this entire semester, I would definitely work to keep those as entertaining and affordable as possible. Even in the midst of a busy semester, I know how important it can be to take a study break and spend time relaxing with fellow students. I would also like to include additional opportunities by continuing the great work done by past social chairs and look into the latest museum displays, sport venues, performance art events, seasonal walking tours, and further camping and outdoor events. If given the opportunity, I will give 110% to help make this upcoming year the most memorable and fun-filled experience at TSPPPA.

Nominee for Volunteer Coordinator

Erin Okeefe

I am running for Volunteer Coordinator for PPSA because I have a great passion for community service. For the past two years I worked for an AmeriCorps organization called City Year Boston. One of the responsibilities I had was Volunteer and Service Director of several community service events.

In these roles, I led groups in service projects on a regular basis, recruited over 2,000 individuals for a large-scale service event, and set up service partnerships with a network of organizations in the community.

While I believe that community service is one of the most rewarding experiences one can have, I approach these projects with the belief that I am working alongside the community, not "saving it."

As a Graduate Assistant, I have maintained working relationships with TSPPPA faculty, which I hope to use in planning and organizing service events. I believe we can build a stronger community service mission in PPSA, and I hope to serve the board with my experience and skills. I appreciate your vote!

Nominee for Professional Development Coordinator

Parisa Manteghi

I like to keep things short and sweet
So here’s a little bit ‘bout me.

I would like your vote for Professional Development Coordinator
I come from Cali, governed by none other than the Terminator.

I’ve run lots of workshops on networking in the past
The skills I help you develop will surely last.

You will need these skills to land the internship of your dreams
Going up and talking to random people is not as bad as it seems.

My job would entail working with Paul Binkley
But when I help him set up the March Madness pool, just try and beat me.

Vote for me because I know what you need.
I’ll do what it takes to help you succeed.

Nominee for PhD Liaison

Teresa Derrick-Mills

My name is Teresa Derrick-Mills. After working for 15 years at a medium-sized nonprofit in North Carolina, I decided it was time to return to school to learn the languages of economists, statisticians, policy-makers and businessmen. My experience taught me that sometimes our worlds can become too small and our languages too limited to effectively share perspectives that are essential for making the world a more livable place. In addition, I became concerned with whether we were asking the right questions or measuring them in the right way to determine the real effectiveness of the various federal, state and locally funded initiatives designed to give children a better start in life. Thus, I am now a first year PhD student in Public Policy and Public Administration with a concentration in Program Evaluation.

I have previously served as the voice for others on United Way, chamber of commerce, Commission for Women, Commission for Human Rights and Relations, and various early childhood education committees. I find that serving as the voice for others keeps me grounded and well informed – I need to be aware of ideas and issues from both sides of the table so that I can serve as an effective bridge between the committee and the group I represent. As the PhD Liaison I will work to be an effective voice for your interests and needs.

When I am not working or in class, I enjoy gardening, cooking/baking, painting/crafting, hiking, and spending some time with my wonderful husband.
