President
Jessie Elisberg is focusing her studies on tourism as a tool for sustainable development, and is primarily interested in community-based development and cultural and natural resource conservation. She hopes to work for an organization that promotes responsible tourism and helps rural communities use tourism to alleviate poverty. In addition to being the President of OID, Jessie is an intern at the United Nations Foundation. She is from Oregon, and lived in New Zealand, Japan, and Argentina before coming to Washington to study international development.
Vice President
Eric Lin graduated in 2003 from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in economics. He performed research for the Political Economy Research Institute. From 2004-2007 he volunteered with Peace Corps in Guatemala where he implemented a latrine project that constructed 25 latrines for families in a small rural community. He also taught basic business education to children. Eric is currently studying at the Elliott School’s International Development Program, and his interest is in the intersection of poverty reduction, economic growth and environmental conservation policies.
Treasurer
Stephanie Potter is studying international public health with a focus on preventable disease management, waterborne disease, and basic health education. She is interested in community level implementation of basic health services and low technology water purification systems. She has lived in the Northern Virginia region for eleven years and is working for a private healthcare consulting company. After her undergraduate studies at the University of Mary Washington, she lived in Madrid, Spain, for a year teaching English in a primary school. She hopes to work with an international NGO based in Washington that would allow her to do field work in project implementation.
Communications Officer
Michael Actongraduated from Rollins College in 2000 with a degree in Theatre Arts and French. He then spent three years teaching elementary and junior high school students in Japan with the JET Programme. While in Japan, he went to Sri Lanka with Habitat for Humanity to help build two homes. After returning to the states, he became interested in learning about how globalization and finite resources affect the developing world. He currently has an internship at the Brookings Institution working with their Internal Displacement Project.
External Communications
Garima Sahai is a graduate student at the Elliott School of International Affairs at GWU. Her specialization is International Economics with specific interest in Private Sector Development/ Microfinance.
She completed her undergraduate studies in Economics at Delhi University, India. Since graduation, she has worked at the National Human rights Commission of India and at a research institute in the state of Gujarat, India. Her passion is to work together to uplift the deprived by empowering them with respectable livelihood opportunites. Aside from her professional interests, Garima has a passion for reading about development, history, and religion.
University Outreach
Jerry Cook graduated from Marquette University in 2003 with a degree in English Education. While at Marquette, he taught in inner-city schools and volunteered for community organizations with a focus on the poor and homeless. From 2004-2007 he was an English teacher in rural and urban Japan. Gerald is currently studying International Development and Economics at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. His interests lie with poverty reduction, economic growth and education.
Webmaster
Kristin Saucier graduated from Colby College with a degree in International Studies and Latin American Studies. She spent her junior year studying in Bolivia and Chile and traveling widely throughout Latin America. After college, she worked for over two years at the Inter-American Dialogue with their education policy reform program (PREAL). She is now a research assistant for Ferris-Morris Associates, conducting research on health sector reform in post-conflict countries and is pursuing dual MA/MPH degrees from George Washington University, with a concentration in global health.
