How can computers protect children from sexual predators?  How can states share information on potential terrorists? How can local, state, and federal law enforcement officials share information more efficiently?  What is being done to crack down on prescription drug fraud?    To deal with the new threats of terrorism and catch criminals who move from state-to-state, law enforcement agencies need to be able to effectively communicate and share information effectively.  With information technology becoming faster and cheaper, collaboration between the private sector and law enforcement jurisdictions is increasingly important.  Housed at The George Washington University Virginia Campus, the Integrated Justice Information Systems (IJIS) Institute is a non-profit entity helping state and local law enforcement and justice agencies information technology to combat crime.  The organization provides education, training, and consultation to agencies that are using new technology to share their data among local, state, tribal, and federal jurisdictions.  The IJIS Institute and its partners work together to define the best methods for dealing with specific problems in data-sharing, and now they are partnering with GW on several projects including developing degree programs focused on information technology for justice and public safety.
