Fatty Acid + ATP + Coenzyme A ---> Fatty Acyl-CoA + Pyrophosphate + AMP + H+

It should be noted, that all long chain fatty acids are transported into the matrix of the mitochondria via the following pathway. Stearate is used only as a typical example for illustration.
