4TH ANNUAL LURA BRADFIELD FOUNDATION LECTURE AND AWARDS CEREMONY TO BE HELD NOVEMBER 8

Three GW Students to Receive the Lura Bradfield Foundation Scholarship Award, Established to Support Women's Education and Programs to Help Abused Women

EVENT	The George Washington University, in collaboration with American University, is hosting the 4th Annual Lura Bradfield Foundation Lecture and Awards Presentation. This year's distinguished speaker, United States Assistant Surgeon General Susan J. Blumenthal, MD, MPA, will discuss issues concerning women's health. Awards will be presented to three GW students: Rinad K. Bsharat, Susan L. Scheungrab and Anna Stojanovic.

COST	Admission is free. The evening program concludes with a reception.

Background:

Three GW students will receive the Lura Bradfield Scholarship, established to support women's education. Lura Bradfield, who suffered abuse as a child and as an adult, designated her estate to provide women access to higher education and to strengthen programs that help abused women. The Lura Bradfield Foundation was established at the time of her death in 1996. Bradfield attended The George Washington University, American University and the Department of Agriculture Graduate School.

Susan J. Blumenthal serves as U.S. assistant surgeon general and is former deputy assistant secretary for women's health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Blumenthal's outstanding scientific contributions and distinguished national leadership in women's health and mental illness have earned her the honor of being named among the 20 most influential women in medicine.

The Lura Bradfield Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate women who demonstrate financial need. This annual event is held to increase awareness of the effects of family abuse, against women in particular, and to stress the importance of education for women.
