THREE GW
FACULTY RECEIVE FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS; UNIVERSITY TO HOST 10 FOREIGN FULBRIGHT
SCHOLARS
WASHINGTON – The
George Washington University is both the home to and destination of this year’s
Fulbright Scholars. Three GW
professors have been honored as Fulbright Scholars and the University will host
10 visiting international Fulbright Scholars in the 2002-2003 academic
year. The Fulbright program awards
800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries
and approximately 800 foreign faculty and professionals each year. The GW faculty Fulbright Scholars
are:
Hernan Gustavo Abeledo – associate professor, Department of
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at The George Washington
University School of Engineering and Applied Science. The scholarship covers
lecturing/research on polyhedral combinatorics and combinatorial optimization at
the University of Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from January 2003 -
March 2003.
James
I. Deutsch – adjunct professor, School of Media and Public Affairs at The
George Washington University. The
scholarship covers lecturing on American Studies for the Ministry of Education
in Oslo, Norway, from August 2002 - May 2003.
Steven M. Suranovic –
associate professor, Department of Economics at The George Washington
University. The scholarship covers
lecturing on preparing for China’s transition into the World Trade Organization
at the Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, from September 2002 – February
2003.
The 10 visiting
Fulbright Scholars traveling to GW are: Najia Badykova, a consultant from
Ashgabet, Turkmenustan; Tirth Khaniya, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur,
Kathmandu, Nepal; Yu-li Liu, National Chengchi University, Taipei,
Taiwan; Kamen Lozev, South-West University, Blagoevgrad, Bulgeria;
Priscilla Roberts, University of Hong Kong; Hidemitsu Sakihama,
Okinawa Times Corporation, Naha, Japan; Nilgun Sarp, Ankara University,
Ankara, Turkey; Adrian Andrew Tyson; Essex Police Station, Essex, United
Kingdom; Hsin-Hua Wu, National Chung Cheng University, Chia-Yi, Taiwan;
and Xiuwen Zhao, People’s University of China, Beijing, China.
The Fulbright Program,
America’s flagship international educational activity, is sponsored by the U.S.
Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Over its 56 years of existence,
thousands of U.S. faculty and professionals have studied, taught or conducted
research abroad, and thousands of their counterparts from other countries have
engaged in similar activities in the U.S. Overall, more than 250,000 people
worldwide have participated in one of the several Fulbright exchange
programs.
