GW CENTURIES CAMPAIGN REACHES HISTORIC HIGHS
Washington -- The George Washington Universitys Centuries
Campaign has raised $300 million--60 percent of its $500 million goaland still
has more than four years remaining in the Campaign. In fiscal year 1999 alone,
the University received $70 million in new gifts and commitments.
The Campaign was announced in February 1996 as a university-wide priority to
build GWs endowment. The original Campaign goal was to raise $300 million by
2000, however by October 1998, over 75 percent of the goal was achieved.
Consequently, the Board of Trustees increased the goal to $500 million and
extended its completion date to 2003.
"The Campaigns success is an overwhelming response and a symbol of
confidence from GWs many alumni and friends," explained Charles T. Manatt,
Centuries Campaign chair.
Gifts to the Campaign have established 270 endowed funds, including 26
endowed chairs and professorships, 139 scholarships, fellowships and prize funds
and almost 80 endowments for department and program support. Additionally,
Campaign gifts have supported new facilities on the Foggy Bottom campus
including the new Mid-Campus Quadrangle, the Health and Wellness Center, Media
and Public Affairs Building, and Marvin Center renovations. Plans are being made
for a new building for the School of Business and Public Management and improved
athletic facilities at the Mount Vernon campus.
In addition to capital gifts, the Centuries Campaign includes annual giving.
As a result of the Campaign, the percentage of undergraduate alumni who
participate in annual giving has increased from 16 percent to nearly 30 percent,
exceeding the national average for all colleges and universities.
The Universitys previous campaign concluded in 1990 totaling $85 million,
which surpassed the $75 million goal.
Located four blocks from the White House, The George Washington University
was created by an Act of Congress in 1821. Today, GW is the largest institution
of higher education in the nations capital. The University offers comprehensive
programs of undergraduate and graduate liberal arts study as well as degree
programs in medicine, law, engineering, education, business/public management
and international affairs. Each year, GW enrolls a diverse population of 19,000
undergraduates, graduate and professional students from all 50 states, the
District of Columbia and 120 countries.
