 GW ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF 65th ANNUAL DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

 Six Alumni, Including INS Commissioner James W. Ziglar and U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth P. Moritsugu, to be Honored During GW's Commencement Weekend

WASHINGTON – The George Washington University Alumni Association has announced the recipients of the GW Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awards for 2002.  The six awardees will be honored at a black-tie dinner prior to GW's commencement-eve “Monumental Celebration” at the Columbus Club in Union Station on Saturday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m.  The honorees will also be recognized during the GW Commencement ceremony on the Ellipse on Sunday, May 19.  This year's recipients are:

Ruth C. Burg (CCAS, BS '45; Law, JD '50) – former administrative judge for the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals;

Kenneth P. Moritsugu (SMHS, MD '71) – acting surgeon general of the 
United States;

William A. Owens (SBPM, MBA '76) – vice chairman and co-CEO of Teledesic LLC, and former Navy admiral;

Elliott C. Roberts Sr. (SBPM, MBA '64) – retired CEO, Charity Hospital at New Orleans, public health professor;

Ya-Qin Zhang (SEAS, DSc '89) – managing director, Microsoft 
Research Asia; 

James W. Ziglar (CCAS, BA '68; Law, JD '72) – commissioner, 
U.S. 
Immigration and Naturalization Service.

"The GW Alumni Association is pleased to honor some of our finest graduates," said Stanley M. Grube (MBA '66), president of the GW Alumni Association.  "These alumni have brought distinction on themselves, and in the process, have enhanced the name of their alma mater."

The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award was created in 1937 to honor graduates of The George Washington University who have achieved distinction in their personal or professional lives.  Each year, several of GW's 190,000 alumni are selected for this prestigious honor.  Recent recipients include Colin Powell, U.S. Secretary of State; Abby Joseph Cohen, chief investment strategist for Goldman Sachs; Charles Krulak, former Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps; John M. Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and former U.S. Ambassador to China Joseph W. Prueher.
