Background:

"Showcasing Africana: Treasures from the Special Collections Department of Gelman Library" explores the African-American experience at GW, as well as in Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C., and the United States.  These experiences are explored through rare Africana books, photographs, manuscripts, the "March on Washington" and other D.C. political memorabilia, and items from the University archives.  The exhibition includes items from the early 18th century through the present.

The second exhibit, "Lost in the City: An African-American Perspective of the Nation's Capital" aims to highlight a side of Washington, D.C. which may not be apparent to tourists visiting the city.  The exhibition was created to present life in Washington from the perspective of African-Americans living and working in the city.  It covers several aspects of "Black Washington" and explores the social, cultural, economic, and historical nuances from the mid-20th century migratory period through the Civil Rights challenges of the 1960s.
