EVENT: The George Washington University Law School will host Robert E. Hirshon, president of the American Bar Association, as part of the 22nd annual Manuel F. Cohen Memorial Lecture series. The topic of discussion is “Take Back The Future: A Guide To Meeting The Challenges Of Legal Practice.”

Background
:  

 

Robert Hirshon is currently serving a one-year term as president of the American Bar Association. He has a substantial practice in state and federal courts at the Portland, Maine, law firm of Drummond, Woodsum & MacMahon, where he represents a broad base of clients including corporations, individuals, insurance companies, and banks. Mr. Hirshon joined the firm in 1973 and has since assisted in developing the firm's Financial Services Group and served as its first chair. He was selected as lead litigation counsel for the Resolution Trust Corporation in Maine and New Hampshire and has twice served on the firm's board of directors.

 

Hirshon received his bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Michigan in 1970 and went on to receive his Juris Doctor there in 1973. He is widely published and has lectured throughout the country on various insurance, banking, civil litigation, and civil justice issues and has taught courses on trial practices and negotiations at the University of Maine School of Law.

 

The American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership association in the world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.

 

The Manuel F. Cohen Memorial Lectureship, created by the friends and colleagues of Manny Cohen, was established at the Law School in 1979. This endowed lecture series serves as a living memorial to Manny Cohen, a leader in the field of securities law, a dedicated public servant, former chairman of the SEC, legal scholar, and a teacher at the Law School for nearly two decades.
