GW’s decision to assist students displaced by Hurricane Katrina was noted by The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Associated Press, and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (9/1).

Law students and professors at GW were noted by Legal Times for their efforts in helping victims of Katrina that are now attending GW (9/12).

The 9/11 quilt on display at GW received coverage in The Boston Globe, The Washington Post (9/9), the Associated Press, on NewsChannel 8, MSNBC, and CNN (9/11).  

GW’s writing course for incoming freshmen was highlighted by The Washington Post (9/6) and by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (9/11) in an article about colleges returning to teaching classics.

A GW Medical Center study on HIV positive Latino gay male use of CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) was noted by several medical journals including Life Science Weekly (9/6), Biotech Week (9/7), and Blood Weekly (9/8).

The Hindustan Times ( New Delhi) discussed a GW/Georgetown study that found that women following vegetarian diets were more likely to lose weight (9/10). The Press Association (9/13) and the Daily Express ( UK) (9/14) also discussed the findings of the study. A study on quality of life for low income women with HIV was noted by several medical journals including Mental Health Weekly Digest,AIDS Vaccine Week, and AIDS Weekly (9/12). The Sacramento Bee cited a report by health policy experts at GW about new plans for state of California health benefits (9/7).

GW’s Landscape Design Graduate Certificate Program was highlighted by The Washington Post as a way for Washington residents to learn a new hobby (9/1).

American Health Line mentioned a Department of Homeland Security venture with GW to develop a course on shopping mall safety (9/6).

A study done by GW’s Center for Economic Research was cited in a Washington Post article about telecommuting (9/14).

Gordon Adams, professor of the practice of international affairs, was quoted by Inside the Pentagon on how Katrina will affect defense spending (9/8). He also published an opinion piece for The Baltimore Sun about President Bush’s handling of Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts (9/8).

Deborah Avant, associate professor of political science and international affairs, was quoted by Financial Times on the number of foreigners providing capital for Iraq (9/13).

Susan Bennett, director of the Women’s Heart Center, was quoted by The Washington Post about comfort foods and heart risks among African American women (9/7).

Nathan Brown, professor of political science and international affairs, was interviewed by The Daily Star ( Lebanon) on the domestic political consequences of rejection of the Iraqi constitution (9/1).

Peter Caws, University Professor, was quoted in a Vancouver Sun article about a Christian sect that is involved in Canadian politics (9/15).

Mary Cheh, Elyce Zenoff Research Professor of Law, was quoted by the St. Petersburg Times about Justice Rehnquist’s life (9/4). She was also quoted by the Voice of America about John Roberts’ nomination for chief justice of the United States (9/5). She participated in an ABC News World News Tonight discussion on the Pledge of Allegiance (9/14). Her views on the pledge also were broadcast on ABC Good Morning America (9/15). Finally, Cheh was quoted by the St. Petersburg Times about John Roberts’ legal views (9/15).

Frank Cilluffo, GW associate vice president for homeland security, was quoted in a Reuters article on the ability of the U.S. to effectively handle a terrorist threat (9/2). He also appeared on Fox News Special Report with Brit Hume, discussing looting after Hurricane Katrina (9/5). He was quoted by the Associated Press (9/5) and The Baton Rouge Advocate (9/6) about how red tape impeded attempts to help victims of Katrina. Cilluffo was quoted by The Record ( New Jersey) on how to protect against disaster (9/11). He was quoted by the Chicago Daily Herald about spending on homeland security (9/12). Finally, he was quoted by Knight-Ridder about delays in federal response to Katrina (9/14).

Gene Cohen, professor of health care services, was quoted in a Boston Globe article about aging (9/7). He also was quoted by The Washington Post about the psychological effects of disasters on the elderly (9/14).

Charles Craver, Freda H. Alverson Professor of Law, was quoted by the Gannett News Service about declining numbers in the United States’ labor movement (9/1). He was also quoted by the Tampa Tribune about the willingness of big industries to take on union labor (9/5). He also was quoted by the Rocky Mountain News about labors unions and pay cuts (9/8).

Robert Dunn, professor of economics, wrote a piece for Financial Times about challenges facing Japanese economics (9/8).

Henry Farrell, assistant professor of political science and international affairs, was quoted by The Australian on political science and blogs (9/14).

Mark Gerchick, director of GW’s Aviation Management Graduate Certificate Program, was quoted by The Baltimore Sun about the resilience of U.S. airlines (9/11).

Amb. Edward “Skip” Gnehm, Shapiro Visiting Professor of International Affairs, wrote a letter to the editor in the U.S. News & World Report about prospects for Israel-Palestine peace (9/12).

George Haddow, SEAS part-time faculty, was quoted in St. Louis-Dispatch and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stories about FEMA’s difficulties with responding to Hurricane Katrina (9/11, 9/12).

John Harrald, director of GW’s Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management, was quoted by the Associated Press about problems in emergency communication (9/1). Harrald also was quoted by The Washington Post about research on New Orleans and its vulnerability to disaster. He was quoted by the National Post about preparedness for the hurricane (9/2), and by the Associated Press again about communication during Hurricane Katrina (9/3). The AP quoted Harrald about poverty among Katrina’s victims (9/4), and The Washington Post quoted him about the restructuring of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) restructuring post-9/11 (9/4). The Charleston Gazette, The Seattle Times,TheBuffalo News, and other news sources also quoted Harrald about poverty in the areas most severely affected by Katrina (9/5). Finally, Harrald appeared on CNN News Night with Aaron Brown, NPR All Things Considered and was quoted in an opinion piece by The Record (New Jersey) about FEMA’s response to Katrina (9/5, 9/7, 9/8).

Stephen Hess, distinguished research professor of media and public relations, was quoted by USA Today on President Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina. He also was quoted by The San Francisco Chronicle on government spending for Katrina (9/1). Hess commented for The Hartford Courant on legislative action against high gas prices (9/2). He was quoted by the Houston Chronicle about Sen. Hilary Clinton’s senatorial race, and by Cox News Service on the impact of Cindy Sheehan’s protest against the war in Iraq (9/4). Hess was quoted by The New York Daily News about the Vice President Dick Cheney’s actions regarding Hurricane Katrina (9/7). Hess was quoted by The Canadian Press about President Bush’s image after Katrina (9/8). He also was quoted by Roll Call on whether Congressional hearings will affect Bush’s popularity (9/12). Hess was quoted by the Seattle Times and the Houston Chronicle about Bush’s apology for relief efforts in the Gulf Coast (9/14). He was quoted by the New York Post about Bush’s speech regarding Katrina, and by the San Luis Obispo Tribune ( California) about how Katrina relief funds will shape Bush’s second term in office (9/15).

Amb. Karl Inderfurth, John O. Rankin Professor of the Practice of International Affairs, wrote an article in the International Herald-Tribune about elections in Afghanistan (9/15).

Murhaf Jouejati,director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program, was quoted by USA Today about U.S.–Syrian relations (9/13).

Philip Joyce, professor of public policy and public administration, was quoted by Agence France Presse about miscommunication between local and federal governments in Hurricane Katrina (9/13).

Brian Kamoie, assistant research professor of health policy, was mentioned by USA Today about his role in delivering supplies to the Mississippi Gulf region for hurricane relief (9/15).

Taras Kuzio, visiting assistant professor of international affairs, was quoted by The Kansas City Star about Ukraine President Yushchenko’s visit to New York (9/15).

Daniel Lieberman, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was quoted by The Washington Times about the benefits of detox medicine (9/6).

John Logsdon, director of GW’s Space Policy Institute, was quoted by The New York Times about NASA’s space shuttle launch delay (9/9). Logsdon also was quoted by the Financial Times on space security, and by the Bangkok Post on tourist travel around the moon (9/13). He was quoted by the Houston Chronicle about NASA’s personnel shuffle. Finally, Logsdon was quoted by The New York Times about NASA’s approval to build new vehicles for space exploration (9/15).

Richard Longstreth, professor of American studies, was quoted by The New York Times about preserving landscapes (9/15).

Jarol Manheim, professor of media and public affairs and of political science, was quoted by The Plain Dealer about unionization issues (9/6).

David Michaels, professor of environmental occupational health, and Celeste Monforton, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health research associate, were cited by Nations Health about science and health policy (9/1).

Lisa Delpy Neirotti, associate professor of tourism and sports management, was quoted by The Orange County Register about Los Angeles’ bid to host the 2016 Olympics (9/8).

William Parke, professor of physics, was quoted by The Washington Times on zero gravity laboratories (9/1).

Linda Levy Peck, professor of history, was quoted by Roll Call about British consumerism (9/15).

Richard Pierce, Lyle T. Alverson Professor of Law, was quoted by The Recorder ( California) about auto safety standards (9/6).

Claire Rubin, SEAS visiting scholar, was quoted by Reuters on the predictions of what would happen if a hurricane hit New Orleans (9/2). Her quote also appeared in The Guardian ( UK) (9/3) and The Express on Sunday ( UK) (9/4). She was quoted by The Washington Post on staffing at FEMA (9/13).

Jeffrey Rosen, professor of law, was interviewed by NPR All Things Consideredabout John Roberts’ nomination to the Supreme Court (9/2), Justice Rehnquist’s legacy (9/4), Judge Roberts’ nomination to chief justice of the United States (9/5), and Senate hearings for Judge Roberts (9/15).

Stephen Saltzburg, Wallace and Beverley Woodbury University Professor of Law, was quoted by The Washington Post about Enron’s legal defense (9/7).

Steven Schooner, associate professor of law, participated in Minnesota Public Radio’s Marketplace, where he discussed union laws (9/10). Schooner also was quoted by The Wall Street Journal about the ability of FEMA to react quickly with little funding (9/12). Schooner wrote an op-ed piece in The Los Angeles Times about on fiscal waste during Katrina relief efforts (9/14).

Greg Shaw, senior research scientist at GW’s Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management, was quoted by the New York Post about the evacuation plans of New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina (9/3). He was quoted by the Ottawa Citizen about preparedness for natural disasters (9/9) and in The Boston Globe on whether people are aware of emergency procedures (9/12). He also discussed Katrina on the Nightly Business Report (9/6, 9/13). Finally, Shaw was quoted by the Star-Tribune about relocation of evacuees from the hurricane (9/14).

Roger Schechter, William Thomas Fryer Research Professor of Law, was quoted by The Washington Post on the legality of buying knock-off handbags (9/4).

Joan Schaffner, associate professor of law, co-wrote an article for Legal Times titled “Legal Aid for Animals” (9/5).

Daniel Solove, associate professor of law, was quoted by Money on identity theft and lender’s responsibilities (9/1). He also was quoted by Technology Daily PM about privacy laws (9/8). Solove was quoted by the St. Louis Dispatch about laws on giving out Social Security numbers (9/15). Finally, Solove was quoted by the Globe and Mail ( Canada) about cell phone users that use their camera phone to embarrass others on the Internet (9/15).

Ralph Steinhardt, Arthur Selwyn Miller Research Professor of Law, was quoted by the Los Angeles Times about a labor lawsuit against Wal-Mart that involves facets of international law (9/14).

Steven Suranovic, associate professor of economics and international affairs, was quoted by The New York Times about gas prices (9/7).  

Jonathan Turley, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of Public Service Law, posed a question in USA Today to Supreme Court nominee John Roberts (9/1). Turley was quoted by The Christian Science Monitor on Sen. Arlen Specter and his handling of the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Roberts. Turley was quoted by The Star Ledger ( Newark) about possible chief justice nominations. Turley was interviewed by MSNBC The Abrams Report about Judge Roberts’ nomination for chief justice of the United States (9/5). He was also quoted by the Arizona Republic and The Christian Science Monitor on Justice Rehnquist’s legacy as chief justice (9/5, 9/6). His thoughts on the Supreme Court’s decision on private lands appeared in The Bond Buyer and Congress Daily AM (9/8). Turley was quoted by the Australian Financial Review and wrote an USA Today op-ed (9/9) about Judge Roberts and how he would be as chief justice. Turley appeared on MSNBC The Abrams Report to discuss claims of negligence in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (9/13). Turley was quoted in a Voice of America broadcast about who could be nominated to replace Justice O’Conner. Turley was quoted by TheChristian Science Monitor on Judge Roberts’ views on major issues (9/14). He also was quoted by Investors Business Daily about Senate hearings for John Roberts’ confirmation (9/15).  

Robert Tuttle, professor of law, was quoted in The Christian Post about Justice Rehnquist’s religious beliefs (9/5).
