Support
IERES is grateful for support from individuals, foundations and corporations for its activities. This support helps us to fund students studying at GW or in Europe/Eurasia; students and professors conducting research; outside speakers sharing their insights at IERES; conferences, seminars, and brown-bag lunches bringing students, professors and outside experts together; film and discussion evenings with students; and many other interesting, educational endeavors.
In recent years, IERES has received funding from the National Endowment for Humanities, the Henry Luce Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Stuart Family Foundation, and the Heritage Foundation of the First Security Federal Savings Bank of Chicago. Alumni and other interested individuals have also contributed endowments or other funds to help support the study of Europe and Eurasia. We are grateful to A. Michael Hoffman, Detta Voesar, the William and Helen Petrach Endowment for Ukrainian Exchanges and Programs, the Helen and Sergius Yakobson Scholarship endowment, the Maria H. Davis European Studies endowment, and for their support of crucial activities of IERES.
It is our pleasure to announce the establishment of the Millar Family Fund, which will support an annual lecture on economics or economic history in Russia (or the Soviet Union) as well as student and faculty research. The fund reflects Professor Emeritus James Millar’s lifelong dedication to the study of Russian and Soviet economics and was established by Jim’s immediate family.
Professor Millar earned his B.A. from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. Before coming to the George Washington University, he was the Director of International Programs and Studies and Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois. Throughout his career, Professor Millar has received numerous accolades for his work. He has been a Wilson Fellow as well as a Guggenheim Fellow. His publications include The Soviet Economic Experiment (1990) and The ABC’s of Soviet Socialism (1981). In 2004, he published The Encyclopedia of Russian History, a four volume collection, which was recognized by the American Library Association as an outstanding reference work. In 2007, Professor Millar received an American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) Award for Distinguished Contributions to Slavic Studies. Although Jim retired from teaching in May 2004, he remains a vital figure at the Institute, where he can be found just about every day, and continues to give papers, publish and travel. The inaugural James Millar Lecture, “The Millar Agricultural Surplus Hypothesis and the Soviet Archives,” will be given by Professor Paul R. Gregory on November 1, 2007 from 4:30-6 at the Elliott School.
From 1989 to 2001, James Millar served as the Director of the Institute for Sino-Soviet Studies, which then became the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies. The establishment of the Millar Family Fund ensures that Professor Millar’s legacy in the field of economics and at IERES will continue for years to come. A campaign is planned to match funds donated by the Millar family. We hope that former students, colleagues and friends of Prof. Millar will take the opportunity to contribute.
