Certificate Program

Currently, there are two options regarding the Graduate Certificate:

  1. Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness and Response

Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Preparedness and Response

The Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness and Response (abbreviated as the HS EPR ) is offered by the GW Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE) and reflects the research and scholarship generated by the GW Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management (ICDRM). The graduate certificate is awarded upon completion of six (6) graduate courses (see below for the course requirements for on and off campus students and the course descriptions).

Students may also enroll in the EMSE Master of Science Degree in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering with a concentration in Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management and may transfer the credits for all six courses (completed with a grade of B or better) taken for the HS EPR certificate into their Masters of Science Degree program of studies.

Off Campus requirements:

EMSE 230, EMSE 232, EMSE 233, EMSE 234 plus two of the following four courses: EMSE 239, EMSE 240, EMSE 332, EMSE 333.

On Campus requirements:

EMSE 230 plus five of the courses listed below.

  • EMSE 233 Information Technology in Crisis and Emergency Management
  • EMSE 234 Management of Risk and Vulnerability for Hazards and Terrorism
  • EMSE 238 International Disaster Management
  • EMSE 239 Medical and Public Health Emergency Management
  • EMSE 240 Management of Terrorism Preparedness and Response
  • EMSE 332 Disaster Recovery and Organizational Continuity
  • EMSE 333 Hazard Mitigation in Disaster Management
  • EMSE 334 Environmental Hazard Management

Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Public Health

This certificate requires completion of four of the courses listed below plus six credit hours from the School of Public Health and Health Services (specific courses selected to meet the student’s interests). These six courses (completed with a grade of B or better) can be applied toward a Masters of Science Degree in Engineering Management upon application and acceptance to a degree program by the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

  • EMSE 239Medical and Public Health Emergency Management
  • PubH 201Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine
  • PubH 202Biostatistical Applications for Public Health

Two Elective Courses:

Students may select two of the following courses. Note that appropriate electives from other departments will be permitted with advisor’s approval.

  • EMSE 230 Homeland Security: The National Challenge
  • EMSE 233 Information Technology in Crisis and Emergency Management
  • EMSE 234 Management of Risk and Vulnerability for Hazards and Terrorism
  • EMSE 238 International Disaster Management
  • EMSE 240 Management of Mass Terrorism Preparedness and Response
  • EMSE 332 Disaster Recovery and Organizational Continuity
  • EMSE 333 Hazard Mitigation in Disaster Management
  • EMSE 334 Environmental Hazard Management
