Public Policy
At The George Washington University, you have the
opportunity to study public policy and policy-making
processes, in preparation for an academic career or
for a career as a policy researcher or analyst, government
relations professional, or manager in a business,
non-profit organization, or government agency. And
you can do it in Washington, DC - where policy is
made.
To help you find the program that meets your needs, we suggest that you
ask yourself these questions:
Do you want a degree specifically in public policy,
or would you prefer another kind of degree (for example,
an MBA, or a Ph.D. in political science) but with
an emphasis on policy?
Do you want to be a generalist with broad knowledge
of policy and methods for analyzing policy, or do
you want to specialize in a particular area of policy
making, such as health or education policy?
Are you interested in pursuing a master's degree or
a doctoral degree?
When you apply for admission to GW, you must apply
to a specific program. Most programs, however, allow
you to take courses from other programs as part of
a chosen specialty area or as part of your electives.
We will work with you to help you acquire just the
combination of knowledge and skills you want.
GW's policy programs are sorted into three groups:
General Public Policy Programs
Specialized Policy Programs
Other Graduate Programs with Policy Tracks or Emphases
General Public Policy Programs
These programs offer the tools for analyzing public
policy across a broad range of policy areas. They
are designed for generalists who want to "major" in policy studies, although students typically "minor" in a particular area of policy to analyze.

Specialized Policy Programs
These programs examine in depth policy issues of a particular content area or from a particular disciplinary perspective. Expect more content focus than in the general public policy programs. For example, if you have some interest in educational policy, but want broad grounding in policy analysis at the Master's level, the Master in Public Policy (described above) with an applied field in Education Policy may be right for you.
