The Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Program provides academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education. The grant to GW, written by the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, assists graduate and professional students at George Washington University to further language study and area/international studies. The number of awards is contingent on funding. Information found on this page relates to Academic Year FLAS Fellowships only.
GOALS of the fellowship program include: to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies; to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicant must be a graduate student who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. The applicant must be in good standing in any discipline or program with an international studies focus. Language study must also be an important component of the applicant's academic program, and enrollment in a language class in each semester of the academic year of the award is required.Students studying one of the less-commonly-taught languages below will be eligible. While all applications will be accepted, priority will be given to applicants pursuing language study at intermediate or advanced levels. In addition, priority will be given to master's students who are more likely to pursue government service or enter a professional field. Awardees must be enrolled on a full-time basis for both semesters of the academic year during which they receive the award.
Awardees will be chosen by a GW committee on a competitive basis from eligible applicants based on their academic performance, the relevance of language study to their academic programs, their career and professional goals, and their demonstrated ability in foreign language study.

ACADEMIC YEAR AWARD: Language study must be an important component of the applicant's academic program, and enrollment in a language class at GW in each semester of the academic year of the award is required. For Academic Year 2007-2008, the award will cover full-tuition and regular registration fees and provide a stipend of $14,000 (Awards are contingent on renewal of the Department of Education grant). FLAS awards cannot be held concurrently with other GW awards or other national awards that duplicate substantially the time periods of FLAS Fellowships. FLAS Fellowships may be held for one year only and study must be on the GW Foggy Bottom Campus. Consortium courses are not allowed. Study abroad is not allowed.
FLAS also provides Summer Awards for language study. Students may apply for Academic Year Fellowships and Summer Awards for language study, but can only be awarded one or the other. Please note that students applying for both Academic Year and Summer awards must submit two separate applications and descriptions of his/her proposed programs; one for the Academic Year and one for the Summer.

Unofficial Transcripts -- Current full-time students with at least 9 GW units completed and part-time student with at least 6 GW units complete are only required to submit GW transcripts. If you do not meet this criteria, you must submit undergraduate transcripts as well as GW transcripts. Incoming students must submit underegraduate transcripts.
DEADLINE: Application materials are due to the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships by TBA February 2009.
