The George Washington University wants to help make your application process as direct and easy as possible. Applicants are expected to submit their applications through GW's online system, which maintains confidentiality through the assignment of a personal identification number and allows you to complete the application at your convenience.

Students may start working toward the ETL Masters Degree in non-degree status during any semester, but they must be admitted prior to starting their second semester. This means that application materials must be submitted to the Admissions Office approximately 4 weeks after starting the program. See below for specific information on admissions deadlines and requirements. Courses taken in non-degree status prior to acceptance as a degree candidate will count as transfer credit provided the grade of "B" or better was earned in the course. All transfer credit requests must be submitted to the ETL office for faculty review. Students may not transfer more than 12 credits into their program.

Application Terminology

Recommendations - Two letters of recommendation are required for all applications. One letter should be from a faculty member and the other from a professional supervisor.

Transcripts from International Institutions - Official transcripts from institutions outside of the United States must be accompanied by an official transcript evaluation from an accredited independent evaluating agency. Please be sure you request a detailed evaluation that includes all course titles, credit hours, grades, grade point average (GPA), United States degree equivalency, and date of degree conferral. Statement of Purpose In an essay of 250 to 500 words, please state your purpose in undertaking graduate study at The George Washington University. As part of your Statement of Purpose, describe your academic objectives, research interests and career plans. Also discuss your related qualifications, including collegiate, professional and community activities and any other substantial accomplishments not already mentioned on the application form. In addition to following the above guidelines, you should clearly indicate your intended primary and supporting fields of study and describe your research area.

Required Tests All Masters Degree applications require that you take either the general test of the GRE or the MAT. (For exceptions, see below.) Test scores more than 5 years old will not be considered. To be sure your scores are sent to the correct school, you must give the testing service the appropriate school code.The codes for GSEHD are:

For GRE scores: R5246

For MAT scores: 1047

EXCEPTIONS: The standardized test is waived for applicants who have already completed a Masters or Doctoral Degree that was conferred from an accredited institution of higher learning.ETL Graduate Certificate applicants do NOT have to take either the GRE or MAT test.

International Applicants

In addition to taking the GRE or Miller Analogies Test, international students are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS. Please use the institution code R5266 to have your TOEFL and TWE scores sent to the Graduate School of Education and Human Development. A code for IELTS scores is not required. Please note: TOEFL and/or IELTS is not required of students:

1) Whose native language is English.

2) Who have a bachelors or masters degree, with a minimum two years course study, from an institution in a country where English is the native language (the U.S. and territories, Great Britain and territories, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada)
